Ive been looking for a 347 stroker long block or crate to put in my 66. I've narrowed it down to either Coast High Performance and DSS Racing. Ive heard good things of both companies but can anyone tell how well theirs works? The one from CHP has a compression ratio of 10.80:1, can I run a pump gas off that? I dont really know what type of pistons I should get, I would assume flat but im not sure. What size of carb should I put on it? I have a 600 Speed Demon off of my old 289 that I hope will work.

I'm sure you'll get many different opinions on this one but my experience is this: I went with DSS and got their 331 long block. Fairly mild build with 10.2 compression, air gap manifold, 600 holley, XE268HR cam, AFR 185 heads. I had them finish it off by providing the pan, and front cover, starter and distributor from my old engine.

I had it dyno'ed right after I picked it up and it put out (off the top of my head) about 375 hp and 390 lbs/ft of torque.

The heads were a mistake. I had ordered 165s but the day before I was to show up and pick it up, they said they were sent 185s by mistake. I said go ahead with the build. Probably not the best combo now for power but there's really good room for improvement with a cam and carb upgrade in the future.

Very happy with DSS.

I have a DSS 347 shortblock, AFR 185s, comp xe274hr cam, and a mighty demon 650 carb. So far very happy, I will be happier whenever I get finished getting the carb tuned right too!

I have similar compression and I run premium pump gas. (heck I have even drove it on 87 a few times)

I got my 347 long block from CHP and have been very happy so far. It's a 9.5:1 compression, AFR 185 heads, don't recall the cam specs but is all roller valvetrain. I am running Air Gap intake, Holley SA 670, Hooker Comp headers and am very pleased with the performance. I haven't had it dynoed yet, but is rated at 405 HP at the crank. If I were you, I would call both companies and get some first hand experience just talking with them about what they would reccomend for your particular situation. Both companies have good reputations, so I don't think you can make a bad choice. You will know who to but from after speaking/interviewing them.

i suppose one small thing to think about is where you are located. As CHP is in Cali (correct me if I am wrong on that) and DSS is in a suburb of Chicago.

Small OT point: there's an article on AFR's web site showing that 185s make more HP than the 165s through the entire RPM range - even on a 302. So 185s don't look like a mistake to me, especially on a 331.

a lot of guys here use the afr heads. I have the edelbrock vic jrs on my 331. this is an excellent combo and would recommend it 2 everyone.

My buddy has a CHP street fighter 347 and it runs pretty good "untuned". So far it has run a 7.60 in the 1/8. My stroker i wont mention because it has been problems from day 1.

I would run at least a 650 demon or 750 holley . . .

How about RNH Performance? Rick's a member here (Rick 91GT) and has built a lot of the 5.0 guys engines without a single complaint. He's located in PA, if that's a concern, too.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I was hoping to re-use my Demon but I agree that its too small. Ive emailed both companies but ill give them a call soon. I was going to get like an Edelbrock RPM Air Gap or the Victor Jrs and around a 750 Holley carb. The roller 302 block should bolt right up to my stock C4 auto tranny right? I plan on getting a new transmission eventually but am hoping to do that later if I can. And my location shouldn't really matter for shipping because I live in rural Colorado so it will be a pretty hefty price. On a bit of a side note I was wanting to get the Flaming River power steering conversion kit, does the power steering change the oil sump? It should still be a front sump I think.
