Looking for a 65 or 66 Fastback....

I currently own a 91 Mustang GT that's had more of a life savings spent on it, but I'm ready for a change. I've always wanted a 60's mustang, but could never put a finger on which one I want. After watching "War of the Worlds", I loved the Shelby H that cruise drove, did some research and decided the fastback is the one I like in that paticular year. Hopefully plan on selling mine and getting a decent one. No 6 banger either. Ebay seems high. Anyone have any tips on where I can get one reasonable? I'm not talking about a Shelby, but just a nice fastback. Thanks.

i suppose you tired the classifieds on this forum? and other forums? try looking in old laydy's garages, thats where you always seem to find that classic car thats in perfe4ct condition for like $500 just so she can get rid of it. haha anyway i like that car too man. good luck with your search.

Ebay I don't think is far off on the market price for fastbacks. I was seriously looking into getting one that had been striped down to metal and had all the body work done but just need to be put back the way you wanted it. It went for 9k! I think anything lower than around 4-5k and your going to be doing a lot of work on it unless you luck into one. If it was me and I have the money I'll pony up the 10-15k and get one thats already been restored.

Now if I can find a 6 banger cheaper....

Was that actually a Shelby or a clone? If I remember correctly the steering wheel was for pony interior. That doesn't mean it isn't a Shelby but if I had a Shelby it would have the right steering wheel on it. No matter it is still a great looking car and shouldn't cost too much to duplicate.

It's funny I am going the other direction trying to buy a late model to race and retire my 68. I am not going to get rid of it but I am putting it back to full time cruise/car show status (yawn). I bought a 90 LX ($800) to build into a race car but it runs so good with the 4 cyl/T5 (30 mpg) I use it as a daily driver to fight the high gas prices. I am once again looking for another late model....and yes they are totally different than the early models. Good luck on your hunt!

Look in small towns. I live in a town of about 25,000 pop. I got my NICE 64.5 from a nieghboring town of 1,500 peeps for $5,000. I would look up and down the sides of service roads in semi-rural areas. I saw a 69 mach1 that was in FAIR condition on the side of one of these roads going for $3,500 (it was more work than I was willing to do at the time). good luck. I feel it's only fair to warn you that, at least in my experience, there is ALWAYS something that needs to be fixed and it can become quite expensive. However, these cars are relativly easy to work on if your mechanically minded and have a few tools.

Another vote for finding a good solid 6 cylinder and doing the conversion. If you are planning on builiding the car yourself and are looking for a more modern drive then your probably going to upgrade the suspension and drive train anyway.

How much does the interior differ from the 6 banger? Should I go with a 67-69? What body looks better on the fastback? I don't like the rear side windows, but the covers look good.

the interior was just an option, so a 6 cyl can have the same as a v-8. unless you intend on totally changing the car around, you should buy a true v8 fastback. they may be more expensive initially, but they make far better investments than any 6 cyl. i found a '66 A code 4-speed fastback for 7,500. it needs work and i still haven't decided if i want it, but thats about what you should expect to pay for a fairly rough car that has a v8 4 speed. its almost impossible to drive around town and find a cheap old mustang. whether you're in the backwoods or not, everyone knows muscle cars are valuable.

haha you will not find a lot of people who like them over here...people feel that they are just using up perfectly good fastbacks to make clones of a fiberglassed up gt500...my standpoint is somewhere in the middle

Too expensive and I hate having Fiber glass as a kit, breaks and cracks! Anyway, I like the front on the 64 1/2 & 65, but I love the look of the rear on the 67. What motor did they put in the 67-69?

From what I've seen the 67 to 69 has this rearend that's not a shelby. Please correct me if I'm wrong. I hate the rear on this one.

I'm thinking of one like this, I like this front end and rear better than the blue one above. If I can't have the rearend and front I like, I'll stick with a similar one like this shelby 350H.

I personally hated the '67 when they came out, as it looked like someone ran into the panel with the tail lights! Never did figure that out. The roof line and 'bigger hips' looked great, though.

Wasn't prepped well, and there are a couple of small surface rust bubbles under the paint. I knew I could turn the car around overnight for a quick profit if I decided. Now it sits in the garage and everytime I walk past it, I tell myself it is WAY to pretty to sell, and I need to get on with the work!

These cars are getting so popular that the prices are steadily rising. Back in the late 80's there was a HUGE price spike in big-block muscle cars. A few years later those prices fell substantially. Now look at where any kind of 60's/early 70's big block car is priced...

It's got about $16k invested. Still need to paint the 4" cowl hood. Has the stalker front bumper, cobra rear, saleen wing, you name it. She will be hard to let go.
