Exhaust Looking for different catback exhaust.

Hey guys,

Currently my car has some type of Borla mufflers. They look to be in excellent condition, but have very little noise. The tailpipes don't seem to fit well, or maybe not installed well. The passenger side rests on the plastic cover of the fuel pump. It's melted completely through. I did order a new fuel tank cover.

Either way, I'm looking for something with a little more aggressive sound, but not sure if I want something as loud as the Flowmaster american thunder.

I'm still running the factory h pipe. Looking for recommendations!

I've been looking at these Flowmasters, but haven't heard much about them.

I’ve never heard them either, but a stock fox with a stock H pipe isn’t going to be very loud no matter what cat back you install so I wouldn’t worry to much about that.

I've had flowmaster and now have Slp loudmouth catback.
I love the loudmouth sound and large tailpipe tips.

I just don't understand what the deal is about getting 'that' sound.
A bigger tailpipe will amplify the sound some, and I agree the stock H pipe will muffle a lot of 'that' sound.
I have some unknown mufflers, no cats and 2 1/2" tailpipes, sounds good to me. No drone, not loud as far as I can tell, just a nice rumble.

After hearing all the new cars with that hideous sound (sorry) , i haven't heard hardly any fox body cars that sound bad. I was tired of mine being so loud so i went back to my original muffler i swapped to first thing. Dynomax Super Turbo...the original ones. Excellent deep sound but not too loud. The rest of my exhaust is: BBK Ceramic shorties, BBK X pipe, MAC pipes and connections the rest of the way back except the mufflers. And thanks to the way MAC designed the connection at the axle hump, I've never had a problem making the tailpipes fit and adjust with no problem.

What sound are you referring to? The Flowmaster FlowFX? All the new coyotes sound like crap compared to a pushrod motor.

Referring to how the new cars sound. I don't like it no matter what they do to them.

Exhaust sound is a slippery slope.
Dan is right, with the stock h pipe on there the car just isn't going to be loud.
But if you remove it completely, most likely it will be too loud.
My vote today would be a catted X pipe and whichever catback you like. Even if you don't need emissions, the cats keep the smell away along with muffling the sound enough to not be excessive.
If you want to run a panhard bar one day, choose wisely.

I’ve heard decent ones. The issue is the rear mounted mufflers eliminates the tail pipes and that totally changes the sound and not for the good. I had a off road Pro-Chamber and the Flowmaster axle back on my 2006 GT and it was loud but had a nice deep tone to it and was not obnoxious. On my 2011 GT I installed the GT500 axle back and it had a nice mellow tone that sounded good but was perfectly fine on long road trips. In my experience most of the newer Mustangs I hear running around my neck of the woods are either bone stock or loud enough to wake the dead and knock them out again and super raspy. No in between.

My plan is to basically keep this car 99% stock. That includes the factory h pipe. I'm 99% leaning towards the Flowmaster FlowFX. And it's roughly 200 dollars less than the Flowmaster american thunders.

I just haven't found any foxbody mustangs running them, which makes me a little nervous.

I had Flowmaster American Thunder cat back on my stock '86, and loved it. After some engine mods (heads, cam, intake, etc.) but with stock H-pipe it was considerably louder. Replacing the stock H-pipe with a Bassani catted X-pipe, it's way too loud for me.

Same setup here. Bassani catted X-pipe and flowmaster A/T. It sounds nice, but after some motor work I could use a slight reduction in volume.

I’m likely going to swap on the Borla Pro XS as I love the tone of those and it’s been noted they are a much quieter muffler than the chambered mufflers.

However, the american Thunder setup sounded fantastic.

Bassani cat-back, not the cheapest option but I haven't heard anything better especially with long tubes. Not many guys run them either so kind of unique sound.

I haven't really found much info on the XS mufflers.
If they had a size that bolted into my ultraflo catback i would consider them.
I can't risk messing with the exhaust too much because of the panhard bar, so i may just land up with super turbo's.

I have the same issue. I have a PHB I have yet to mount but in my mock-ups, my A/T catback and tailpipes fits perfectly.

The challenge is if I do swap the mufflers is that I need to reuse the tailpipes otherwise it won’t clear at all.

My Borlas were 2'' longer overall length than stock length mufflers,and with the PHB in place I had to trim the intermediate tubes an inch or two to get proper fitment.
Downside is that if I ever swap back to a stock length muffler I'll need to purchase new intermediate pipes.
On a side note,when I made a switch from a lightly ported Explorer to an RPM II(the only change)the sound level dropped 6 db's.

I’m sure that the FLAPS carried repair pieces that would be for when a muffler flange had to be cut off the pipe and would extend it as at least this much. If some of those systems could be cobbled together with clamps, a shop or someone decent with welding could do a respectable job on a solid pair of pipes.

Is your catback stainless?

My plan for the torque arm was to buy more flow tubes and if need be slide my bassani 3 piece x pipe forward if there was clearance issues.
But taking the measurements on those you listed and measuring my existing flow tubes, the length looks to match, i was hoping they were long and you cut them to length, but i guess not.
