I lost my only key to my 96 cobra. Can I call ford with the vin# to get another key or do I have to get another ignition? HELP....

You can go to FORD yourself and buy a new key. You can read the manual on how to program it. It is simple to do! Just don't let them talk you into doing it for you.

I lost the key pad also, can i have aaa open the door? And do I bring my vin# and they will make a new key? I'm freeking out about this, I'm at work lost my keys and stuck at work

Key Pad? Just get into the car, hell if you have a key that will allow you in the vehicle is a start. You can get into the car without the chipped key! It just wont start the vehicle.

No, they will sell you a blank key IIRC around 40-50 each and then read the manual and program it.

Oh hell, just thought of something I believe you are supposed to have to put in the key that works to start the process.

Now I stumped myself?

Let us know what happens when you call the dealer?

You're pretty much gonna be sucking. To program a key yourself you need a working key.

I'm not sure about the new key from the VIN. I remember when I bought one new car (not a ford) they told me that this wasn't possible and not to loose the little metal tab that came with the keys.

That key is a transponder key with little RF chip that is matched to the cars ignition. You must contact Ford in order to get one. I believe you actually have to go down to the dealer with VIN# and proof of ownership. Call the dealer and maybe they can send someone out.

Ok I just typed a long response to you but my ****ty cpu restared. To make a long story short, the same crap happened to me. Call an automotive locksmith who deals with PATS1 keys. My 2 new keys costs $150. Ford couldn't do anything unless I towed the car to them....they suck.

$150 for two keys? Oy. When somebody broke into my daily driver and stole a set of my Cobra keys, I had my car rekeyed with three new keys, one new remote and all of the programming done for $200.

I don't know where some people buy keys, but most of you get ripped off. My dealer charges less than $25 bucks. Hell, it used be less than $20. Either way, a good, reputable Ford dealer isn't going to charge you a ton of money. They aren't out to make a profit on keys. It is just a quick trip to the parts department. You give them the vin and they cut it for you right there.

On the '99 and above, you need two keys and you can program the third by yourself. I think that on the pre-'99 models they have to get into the module if you need a new key and you don't have the old ones.

Find yourself a good dealer that isn't out to rip you off and go from there. It might take a while, but it is worth it. The guys that give you the best price are the ones that want you as a customer. A fair price equals a return visit when you need a part or service.

Programming a new key is simple IF and only if you already have a key that will start the car. The procedure in the owners manual is fairly trivial, but if you don't have a working key, the dealer has to do it.

The steps in the manual allow an owner to program a second or third key as needed.

well i had the car reprogrammed too and I got the 2 new reprogrammed keys. The stupid keys cost like 20 a piece. THe charge was for the reprogramming and the locksmith coming to my house and figuring out the gorrect key cut.

Ford didn't start associating key codes with vin numbers until some time int 1996. Call your Ford dealer with the vin and they may be able to give you the key code or at least cut you a key off of the key code. Or if they won't do it for you, give me an email at ss93cobra@yahoo.com and I'll just do it myself and email you back the key code if it comes up. (parts manager at local Ford dealer, been here 10 years, glad to help out if I can)

I remember asking about duplicating the key for my 99 Cobra -- the locksmith said if I had two keys, making a third would be really easy, and would cost like $30 or something. If I had only one key, it would take longer, and I'd need to bring the car itself, and the cost would jump up to a bit over $100.

Good news, I found the keys, actually a co-worker took them home and noticed she had them 2 days later. I towed the car home and waited hoping I could find them. Thank god, I'm going to ford to make a spare key. Thanks for all the help
