I was out for a ride today and noticed when I put it to the floor there was a big cloud of smoke comming from the rear, when I took a look under the car I found that the black speedo sensor had poped out of place. I think the smoke was tranny fluid spilling onto my exhaust at high rpm. But was wondering how to put the sensor housing back into place. it sides into the hole but there is no way to clamp it down and I think the gear is missing? not positive how it works or if I need a new speedo gear. It is a t5 from a 96 V6 mustang and swapped it into my 95 gt. So can someone please explain how many parts there is to the speedo sensor comming off the tranny? And if the gear is under the black sensor?

Tranny fluid on the exhaust smokes like crazy 'cause it's burning. Had that happen a couple of times, it's scary as heck - you'd swear that the car was on fire.

The sensor is supposed to have a metal bracket clipped on to it, and a screw holds the bracket to the tranny. If those are missing, you'll have to either snag them from a junkyard or improvise something yourself. There is supposed to be a gear on the end of the sensor. it will look something like this:

Ya I know what ya mean, just got it done and thought I already blew it up! ok I got the sensor part and the metal clip but I need the plastic gear, I have a spair from my aode, will that one work? or do I need one from a t5? it looks like the one all the way to the left on the pictures you posted.
Thanks!

You'll need to match the VSS gear to the rears you have in your differential, or your speedometer will be off. The gears are color-coded to tell you that they have a different number of teeth on them.

Supposedly the T5 and AODE gears are slightly different, so I would suggest you get one for a T5. I also seem to remember there is supposed to be a metal clip that holds the gear on to the VSS, so I'm surprised yours came off. Are you sure it's not still stuck in the transmission?

Ya I pulled the black sensor off the car, it was dangling from the connector under the car when I looked, if the gear was under it then it is long gone now. But I will take a look into a new one I beleave I have 3.27's in the rear (stock) Thanks!

Stocker should be a 2.73 if I'm not mistaken! If I'm wrong, hopefully someone will chime in soon.

our cars came with a variety of axle ratios.
check the tag on the axle,or the door tag sticker.
also, the differance between the auto and manual speedo gear is one is longer than the other.
