Don't worry. I love everyone. I meant nothing by it, other then everything he said has nothing to do with a S197. When did this turn into a Crown Vic forum? :SNSign:

It hasn't turned into a Crown Vic forum, but I just so happen to have a Crown Vic and a S-197 GT and both have the same driveline clunk. Both vehicles have 8.8" rear ends and both vehicles have factory installed 3.55 gearsets.

Ok. I don't think I've heard any auto guys talk about this clunk, but yours is an auto. I could bet you the diff, axles, and so on have a different part number on them then your Vic does.

I'm saying, it's a different car with the same SIZE rear end and same gears... nothing more. In no way does this relate to a S197 with a manual....

My S-197 GT has a TR-3650 and last I checked, it was a 5-speed manual. I'm just trying to describe the clunk as best as I can and it just so happens that my Vic does the same thing and it has an automatic (4R70W). It can't be a coincidence that they make the clunk under the same conditions. I've asked other Vic owners (with factory 3.55s) and they too have noticed clunks in the same scenarios I have described, so I can only imagine it is "normal" with a manual/automatic S-197 GT. Both the GT and the Vic made/make the clunk since they were brand new. I guess it is the nature of the beasts (Panther and S-197).

The differential is going to be different from the 2000 Vic, because the 05-up GTs hasve 31 spline axles, but it would be the same differential as the 05-up Vics because they all get 31 spline axles from the factory. The number of teeth on the gears are probably going to be the same, and quite possibly even the same gears. I have a fleeting suspicion that the factory did not set the proper pinion gear depth or preload, which can affect how much contact it makes with the ring gear teeth (backlash can also affect this).

I hope someone eventually finds the source/cause of this clunk. In the meantime I'm not going to loose too much sleep over it.

Mine's going to the dealer Wednesday to have the ring and pinion changed because of this problem. They had no problem doing the work, and know there is something wrong back there. Ford needs to start setting rear ends up right, cause in warranty repairs, it's costing them a fortune. Way more then it would cost to fix the problem before it IS a problem.

Most manual trannies are pretty tough...but anything and everything has a breaking point...I would take it in and have checked out...(next time try a normal shift...and your tranny will thank you for it)...

Mark25: I can reproduce the clunk very easily w/o shifting the 3650: Cruise at under 2000 RPM in 2nd or 3rd gear, let off the throttle, wait 3 seconds and suddenly crack open the throttle. The jolt in the driveline will produce an audible CLUNK from the rear end. That is the same sound I hear if I let off the clutch too quickly during a timid/tame up/downshift. I can reproduce it in the Vic with the same driveline jolt, or a sudden jolt + up/downshift.

That is brutal, a brand new car making clunking noises. That would drive me up the friggin wall. My 91 doesnt even make rear end clunking noises.

I did some more testing on my GT and found that for upshifts, if I wait a few extra seconds before letting the clutch out and upshifting, the throttle will close up (due to the lag) and the RPMs will match better resulting in an extremely smooth and quiet upshift to the point you ask yourself, "did it even change gears???"

The point is still.... You shouldn't have to change your driving for a car.... there is something wrong with the car if you have to try and "match up better" with anything.

Is this "clunk" noise the sign of something bad for the transmission, or is it simply an annoying noise?

In my case, it is more of a nuisance than a problem. I think it is exacerbated by the throttle lag.

It's a sign of an incorrectly set up ring and pinion. Mines already had the gears replaced twice to no avail, and now the dealer is replacing the whole freaking rear end.

If you are talking to me.. Yes I do. They replaced the ring and pinion twice... to no avail... then they replaced the whole rear end assembly. We got it back and it is worse then it was before, now a whine on deceleration, and acceleration... a horrible clunk between shifts, and it growls sometimes. We need to take it back AGAIN. All it is is incorrectly set up gears, and they just can't get it right.....
