Actually, with the crappy gauge in this car to begin with, you would only notice the higher temps when it was too late. And who stares at their temp gauge constantly? There really should have been a high temp dummy light, but as it stands there isn't. Now, if there are zero lights on in my instrument cluster and the check coolant light pops up, I'm more likely to see that than my temp guage barried in the red zone. And it only takes a few seconds in the red zone to cause the damage, then it's too late.
