LS1 Dyno Request

Ford needs to build a 6 Liter, DOHC, Big bore V8 and put it in a Mustang. If they do that I will tattoo the running pony on my forehead, cash in my stock option plan and sell my child into slavery to buy one.

You bring up a good point here Chad :nice:

I won't get involved in how many cams the mod motor might have :nono:
but
I will address what I believe to be is its major flaw ;)

IT IS TOO SMALL :Word:

HUH? All this time you've been liking the low end on yer 5.0. Why the sudden change o mind?

Finding some results for you:

"Last Saturday I had my car dynoed & watched a SOM ' 02 SS go before me.

6M, SLP 345 HP package (SLP lid & Center Outlet exhaust) - this car had 3K on the clock & was stock down to the paper element - I mean no mods .

314 RWHP !!"

-----

" My 99 dynoed 284/299 at the wheels (M6) bone stock w/3K miles

My 02 dynoed 306/326 at the wheels (M6) bone stock w/1400 miles

They do seem to vary a lot..."

-----------

"My '01 (325 HP) A4 SS dynoed 312 hp/319 tq with 10,000 miles, factory showroom stock!

Typically they will dyno from 295-315 depending on the transmission"

--------------

My view points of what kind of power band makes a nice street motor
have not changed in any way :D

Simply Stated :)
There is WAY more to a Street Car than ... Peak Power on a dyno sheet :Word:

I'm just wanting to look at some basic info
namely
The power band of a typical stick trans LS1

I mean ... Everybody knows they come on strong on the big end
but
I'm just doing a bit of detailed research to see how it really is ;)

When I can find some valid data

I'll use a reference point to compare to that I can relate to :nice:

I'll try to search later if I can, but for now I got to scoot as well.

A "lid" is what we call a "cold air intake." They are not the same. It replaces their stock intake tract, where the air filter is.

If you look at the ls1 engine, there is a rectangular box in the front center of the engine bay, about where the hood clamps shut. That is the "lid" that covers the air filter. The stock ones are restrictive, and some even trim them, but it is best to buy one from SLP, TSP, etc.

Good Luck with the google!

Sort of off topic, but..

I want to know what this engine's about:
http://www.musclemustangfastfords.com/features/mmfp_0711_ford_mustang_roush_ethanol_fuel/index.html

"Don Bowles teamed up with Ford Motor Company and Roush Performance to bring an experimental V-8 engine to NMRA action. The team is flogging the new powerplant and providing real-world feedback to Ford engineers. We speculate this engine will be found under the hoods of several different Ford vehicles, including trucks and possibly Mustangs. Ford Racing Performance Parts is also involved in the project, meaning there could be aftermarket parts readily available when Ford releases it."

Ive had the chance to drive a few LS1's in the past and i've come away really impressed each time. It just seems like GM flat out gave the F-bodies the right engine for the job, whereas ford was either trying to cut corners or just didn't know what it was doing when it put a 5.0 and 4.6 up against those LS motors. Either way, the F-body has been dead since '02 and 5 years later a stock Mustang GT engine is still not on par with a stock z28 engine from half a decade ago.

Look up the bore and stroke of the 302 and 305, check out the wall thicknesses and see for yourself ;)

305-307 = boat anchors

Ford used the 302 cause its been readily avail/cheap/reliable.

In a lx fox, it did ok....but that was 87......

My 94 stang vs. my 95 t/a is laugable, in that it would get BUSLENGTHED! Not to mention destroyed in any twisty environment.

With the ls1's? Hah!

The only thing Ford has ever had going is the 4v 03-04 cobras...which are hella $$$ and weigh 4000lbs.

Shame you need a power adder to run with n/a LSx stuff

Go visit ls1tech and look at stocker times. I've seen guys go 12.7 @ 112 DEAD FREAKING STOCK. No tire, no gimmicks.

If mine wasn't as nice as it is, it'd be gone yesterday.

Hell, i've had $50 in a 14yr old "import" (laser/talon/eclipse) and been within a few tenths of some h/c/i cars here and most of the bolt-on 4.6 crowd.

Different strokes for different folks but damn......are we even swimming?

In horsepower per liter, the Ford is not only on par, but they surpassed the ls1.

The 351 weighs more for one, over the 302. The 302 was well developed, lighter weight, and still had the power potential to stay on track with the TPI, TBI, cars of the day.

come on tom, you are depressing me! :p

kinda sad but it is true, ls/lt 1 cars just make the power :( . course as we all know, the 302 can be there as well....just takes the extra cash.

i like f bodies but a clean mustang gets my attention more, with or without the power.

btw- get your headlights?

I shouldve mentioned that stang vs. t/a bit is talking about dead stock on both cars.

The lt1's sure can put it down, but they've a few hinderances themselves (optispark anyone?) and are harder to wrench on than the ls1 cars, but they don't make the power per mod of the lsx cars.

Lloyd Elliot does aftermarket portwork on stock heads that can really get the lt1's screaming. Many guys on the boards in the 11s on a LE stage 2 head/cam combo.

Nothing's cheap realiably, and lsx stuff certainly isnt cheap. Once I get my gears I feel I should be ok actually on my car. It's not anemic, it just gets hella choked on this 2:73 horsepoop. I shift right out of where the cam makes power :(

Also, yes, I did get my headlights! :D They look badass!

Not quite t/a sleek sexiness, but eh ;)

2.73 and H/C/I is totally mismatched and prolly SLOWEr than stock. Anywho, you guys wonder why I sold my built 306 and went huge. I had an L motor and the 5.0 was a big disappointment.. down low especially. I never got over it and went big C.I., nothing replaces that.

I don't agree with that. I'll pull #'s later from my Dad who works for Ford

More trucks were sold with a 351 than 302's. Look at the price for an F150 with a 302 compared to a 351. Look at the prices in catalogs for 302 blocks compared to 351's. Plus, look how much stronger the 351 block is. My Dad told me warranty info didn't show a 302 any more reliable than a 351.

I ask the question for kicks, I've asked several people at Ford.

gear swap will be night and day! 2.73's holy crap!:nonono:

post pics of the lights!!

This may help Grady, it starts out a bit after 2,000 rpm...

http://www.geocities.com/miner_49/dyno_9_07_02.htm

He does talk about a ram-air system, so hopefully that did not alter the numbers, but his dyno numbers reflect what I have seen on several occasions from a stocker, so I would say it is good.

This is for an '02 Ws6 Trans-Am with the T-56...

David ... You are the Man :hail2:

Thank You Sir :D

A while back, I had to hunt REAL hard to find a stock Fox body stick trans
dyno chart.

I quickly found the LS1 was no different :)

I did find one last night but it was a pic from someone's cell phone
and it was gonna be really hard to work with :bang:

This one you have so kindly provided is much better to work with

I'll try and get something up but its gonna be a few days

Grady

That dyno explains it. You really feel it down low with those cars. Thats why I could never get used to going back to the 5.0. It is amazin the diff .7 liters makes. I am also wondering how the 347 compares.
