Ya know i'm all about that hotrod mentality....the idea of do whatever you have to do to make power and make it cheap...but after you get a custom grind cam done and all the other custom junk done, i can't imagine he's saving much money. The custom intake alone has got to cost some coin...so unless that's something he can make himself, that plus the price of all the other custom pieces would've bought him a decent set of aluminum heads that would probably flow better than the stock LS1 heads.

it seems alot of people go with a custom cam no matter what build they're doing, so i dont think that should be considered in the "overall" cost of his idea. I had "custom cam" suggested to me a million times during my junkyard explorer head build.

It seems like he sees a way of making an intake work. either by fabbing something up or making something else work (did i see someone suggest spacers of some sort?).

The heads cost $75 for him. He sounds like he can make it work without "too much" work. I think he'll come out cheaper or right even with a AFRtype combo.

Although, if he does....i'd really like to see a dyno comparison. I'm interested in what it'll look like.

Best of luck to that man!!!! VERY cool!

That's the key right there....let's see an ending cost total and dyno results.

i dont think hes doing it to make the most power ever.
i think it would be one of the coolest builds ever.
filling in the outer headbolts wouldnt be a goor idea becaise 8 bolts aint enough...10 bolts aint enough. ls1's lift the heads

Well, I hate to be a naysayer, but somehow I just don't think his vision is going to work out quite like he imagined it. Nevertheless, good luck, dude.

It's silly to think that he's the only one who's ever thought of it or tried it...and if it worked then it would've caught on.

if he lucked into those heads for 75 beans he should put them on an LS1 site for 500 beans and buy a set of used TFS heads with his profits. Seems a lot easier and more logical to me.

+1 just what I was thinking.

Cool Idea though, It would be interesting as others mentioned to see dollar/dyno results for the finished product.

I am curious to see how his exhaust will bolt-up, and is the bore centerline the same from head to head?

The ls1 head is slightly longer than a ford head as well.

I think he is going to be dissapointed.

Think about it...how much are stock E7s worth to a 5.0 owner?

I have no idea who's paying $500 for stock LS1 heads since LS1 owners already have them....maybe if you had LS7 heads or something better that they could gain from.

Also just out of curiosity does anyone have flow numbers for stock LS1 heads? I'd be interested to see what they flow compared to a basic set of Edelbrock Performer heads...let alone a set of AFR 165s or 185s or whatever. If this guy can do 99% of the swap/custom work himself, then hell yeah rock out with yourself, but if the total is anywhere near $500, then i say it's a complete waste of time unless it makes at least 50hp more than a decent set of aftermarket Ford heads. There's a guy local who just sold a set of Dart Windsor Sr's that were ported and flowed in the 300cfm region for $700....that's a balls out set of race heads for dirt cheap.

It's just one of those things that goes back to the sentiment, "Just because something CAN be done does not necessarily mean that it SHOULD be done."

I'm all in favor of taking the road less traveled and being weird/different with stuff, but usually it's a matter of doing so as a shortcut to get to the same (or a better) end result. If slapping on a set of old Chevy 350 heads onto a 351W could be easily and cheaply done, especially if it resulted in some good numbers, that would be awesome. But not only is this LS1-and-302W crossbreeding experiment likely to wind up costing a lot of cash, I also seriously doubt it's really going to result in significant gains versus what he could have had for the same or less money invested in more conventional head upgrades.

NASA spent a buttload of money developing an ink pen that could write in zero-gravity conditions. The Russians used a pencil.

stock LS1 heads are worthless, it's not like you can slap them on anything other than a GM gen III engine and the LS1 is at the bottom of the totem pole. it's like putting E6 heads on one of our cars. it's a step backward which is exactly why I could never unload mine. I highly doubt that he would see a 50 hp gain. sure they are made of aluminum and dont weigh a lot, but a good set of ported edelbrocks or TW heads will outperform them anyday of the week.

Ls1 heads have 2.00" intake valves, 200 cc runners, 8mm valves, and tall ports.

Oh rest assured that the LS1 head design is far superior to the E7s.... If he could make it work, then he'd probably see a 70-90 hp pickup. It won't work, though. There's really no "ifs" about it.
