lug nut problems

thanks to the last place i had the car(1989 mustang gt) to get new tires on using their impact wrench and getting my security lug nut WAY to tight, trying to get it off managed to not only break the security lug nut but also the security wrench. I ended up getting the lug nut off with a hammer and vice grips. Problem now is where can i get another security key for the wrench so i can get my other 3 off when i have a flat? also where can i buy just one security lug nut to replace the one thats broke?

On a side note, does it matter that i used my 1989 lugnuts again when i changed the wheels to 1990 pony style wheels? the lug nuts were pretty long that came on the 89 compared to what i would have needed with the pony wheels but they seemed to work fine, and once the center cap is on you cant tell anyway.

For the security nuts you can use a socket that is slightly smaller than the lug nut and pound it on with a hammer, then use a ratchet to remove the nut. You'll probably have to use several sockets as they become fused with the lug nut.

Also, don't hesitate to really pound the socket on as you'll only have one or two chances to lossen it.

Good luck getting the rest of your security lugs off.

I got rid of mine a long time ago. Everyone that has a mustang has the same key anyway. Heck, I may even have my key still somewhere.

It made my life a lot easier when getting new tires, etc.

i got rid of my security lugs too, nice feature for sure on a stock car, but honestly if someone wants my turbines enough to get the means to steal em, and in my own backyard, risking getting shot, go for it

You can get damaged lug nut removers. These might work. Or you could go to an auto parts store and see if they have a set of locking lugs with the remover. There aren't really that many different styles out there, shouldn't be too hard to find another security key.

ill have to stop by tommorow and see if they have one that will match up. Im thinking im best off to get the other three off now and put regular lug nuts on and not have to deal with the problems. Im not really worried about anybody stealing my mustang wheels. Hopefully if i cant find a remover i can get the other three off easily, not going to drive it and give them a chance of tightening up until i get them off.

I used my long chrome lug nuts from my '89 GT Turbine wheels for the new Ponys. It has worked fine for 250,000+ miles. Who is going to see them after you put the cover cap on? Save your money. You're good to go.
