Im looking at a 98 Cobra vert. that already has an X-Pipe (BBK I think, off-road) and FlowMasters. Anyway I got a set of Mac Longtubes from a friend for free, that will fit SOHC or DOHC 4.6L's. My Question is: Can I put them on without buying a new X-Pipe (cut the existing X to fit them) or do I have to buy a completely new X?

And I also have a 3in off-road H pipe already cut for the longtubes, maybe that would help?

Jake

Whoa, do not use MAC Longtubes on a Cobra. The reason, they scavange too much and they will suck the valve seals right from the motor and that will lead to excessive oil consumption..(buring of oil). The second reason is the inside of them are not smooth. They have weld deposits that loosen up and can go into the motor and damage the engine. The third reason is the ceramic coating is a joke, they will rust fast even with storing the car in the winter and avoiding rain.

My advice is sell them for some kind of money, and buy the BBK's. I have them on both my Cobras, they burn no oil, still look good, and have great ground clearance.

As far as your X or H pipe, you will have to caught it down and weld flanges on the end to bolt it up to the new headers. I had this done to my 97 Cobra, because the Bassani X-pipe was one for stock headers. I also had to get smaller converters because the converters on the X with shorties are larger than the converters intended for L/T's, and they would not fit right. It looks good, and has decent clearance to the ground. My 96 I have the BBK L/T's with a short BBK H-pipe that is made for L/T's. The 96 has excellent ground clearance, and looks WAY better. I had the exhaust done twice on the 97. I spent way too much on it, so take it from me, go buy a mid pipe made for long tubes. The first exhaust shop did the work and it looked crappy, the second place did it right, and charged three times as much.

As mentioned above, don't use MAC longtubes on the DOHC engine or you will regret it. Read the entire thread below for more info:

And I don't think they'll fit both DOHC and SOHC engines...they have different exhaust port shapes...the DOHC's are oval and the SOHC's are round...

And you really don't want to put those on your car anyways...

So even though this happens, MAC still sells these long tube headers? How can that be?

I was going to install these on my Brother's '95 Cobra, and possibly on an '01 Cobra. I love all of MAC's products, especially their exhaust!

Oh well...

I tried MAC one time, and never again. I put a MAC catback on a 97 GT and within a year the tips were rusted out. And mind you this was in Texas, so the weather was ideal. When I finally scrapped the POS kit, I tapped on the mufflers and a pile of rust literally fell out of the pipes. MAC headers will never come near my Cobra engine.

I don't get it... We've had a MAC off-road H-Pipe and catback on the '95 Cobra for about six years now, and not ONE spot of rust on the outside... if it's on the inside, I wouldn't know about it... But they've been the best sounding exhaust on a Cobra that I've ever heard.
