I saw a guy last night with the Mac Cold air kit, its looks good but i'm not big into chrome and that was so damn hot. I mean the heat shield and the inlet pipe were so hot I burned my self when I touched it. I don't see how you can get any cold air in that thing it was just like touching a hot radiator. Its looks good if you like chrome but I don't think its going to produce any numbers I mean its just my opinion, i could be wrong but that damn metal was so hot. I think a better route would be to go with the K&N kit or Densecharger sells a throttle body pipe made of plastic for $65 and drop a K&n and customize your old air box to make it a heat shield and there you go.I was so amazed how hot that metal was when I touched it but I guess I should have known, cause its metal underneath a hot hood.

Just my .02

From what i understand the new MAC straight Shot CAI is an improved version where the chrome intake header runs alot cooler then the old MAC kits. Your friend probably had an old kit installed. There is a thread in this forum where a fellow stanger is doing testing with the new CAI kit as we speak. Alot of us are waiting for the dyno #'s because we find the manf. dyno #'s a bit unreal. A boost of 17 to 25 rwhp with just a CAI kit installed is pretty hard to believe but if the #'s are fact then sign me up for one!!!!!

Later........

I installed my straight shot the other day, drove it around for about 45 minutes, got out and touched it, and it was actually cool to the touch.

The guys car last had been sitting, I don't know how long though. But that thing was so damn hot, the only difference i see in the new Mac unit is addition of that heat shield.

It'll likely get hotter as it sits. My Trueflow pipes aren't too hot when we first pull in the garage, but let the cars site for a little while, then open the hood and grab ahold. Yikes!
This is meaningless anyway. The air rushing thru the tube has no time to be affected by the temp of the tube. Not any measurable amount, at least, performance wise.
