Mach 460 rear speaker and amp panel

In my 99 GT I have the Mach 460 system, which I want to ditch and totally replace with my own stuff. If I remove the back speaker and amp panel to fit a sub box in my trunk to have decent trunk room, can I still mount speakers to the rear deck? Maybe a bracket of some sort? Any feedback is appreciated.

Yes, but ... the existing speakers are impedence matched to that amp rack. So if you ditch the amp rack, you will have to rewire all the speaker connections and then, that means you can not use the OEM speakers. I wanted to put in new speakers, but opted not to as the re-wiring job was going to be too expensive. So my iPod-compatible Kenwood uses the same 460 harness going to the amp rack and OEM speakers. Affordable and sounds pretty good.

Well I am going to be rewiring the entire sound system. I don't want anything to do with the Mach 460. I plan on having my own HU and a 4 channel amp along with a mono amp for a pair of JL 10W0v2's.

I did this in my 02, had the mach 1000, sucks. I took a piece of luane plywood and traced the plastic speakers box, amp holder, and wraped it in carpet. Used a couple of black interior screws to hold it up. Turned out real nice. I then put 6 1/2" comps in the rear deck, made adapters out of aluminum flashing, worked out real nice and is a huge improvement over stock. Also did it in my sons 95 gt.

That looks pretty good. Mine right now is a bit more cheaply done but still is adequate for me. I believe the speakers will be fine without the huge ass mach stuff, mine is. Might double check and call Crutchfield and tell them what you have and your concern and I would be willing to bet they know the answer.

Speakers like 5.25" or 5x7" don't need an enclosure like subs do correct?

Alright thanks ahall2004. Just found out that I wont have the money to do this system until summer. I'm kinda bummed but I guess thats life. lol

Then you won't have any problem at all. I agree that it is the way to go if you can swing it. It was disappointing to me that you can't just change the speakers without changing out all the wiring, too.

Yeah I do not want to deal with the factory stuff. I'll take the extra time and do it the way I want it done.

I didn't have all the $ all at once either, when I wanted to ditch my '99 GT Mach 460. But I knew what I wanted and purchased everything piece by piece. Got everything lowest cost, free shipping or low shipping from various sources. Once I had all the parts/pieces, I tore into the project. Just wish it wasn't July in NC when all the parts came together. I lucked out with the wiring kit, got a $120 4ga. 4ch amp kit on clearance for $32 at my local best buy, couldn't pass that up.

The job itself was a lot easier pulling the seats and the carpeting out of the way. The thing that was a pita for me, was the amp located under the factory head unit. So I just disconnected the wiring to it and left it there. Good luck with your project it'll sound 1000x better once you get it done.

Thanks for the insight nancygrl, being a college student is tough at times. Haha. I have so much wants for this car it is unreal. However, the sound system will be next because speakers are starting to quit on me.
