I have a Alpine CD player in my 1996 Mustang GT along with the stock Mach 460 speakers and amps. When listening to music the drver speakers will go in and out. but not completely off. But when the r working the passanger side is louder. Much cleaner sound. The back ddrivers side speaker is barely working. Does anybody know if this is a speaker problem or a amp problem or even wiring? Bestbuy did the installation of the deck. Thanks for your help stangnet.

Did it ever work OK after the HU swap?

Mine is doing the same thing. It is an amp. Don't ask me which one though. It will cut out and I can floor it in 1st and it will come back on.

Your first mistake was allowing Best Buy to do the installation. I dunno about other Best Buys or the one in your area but the one in my area is NOTORIOUS for frying the various electronics they install in people's cars.

The 96 Mustang Mach system has 3 amps, one for the tweeters that is located behind the deck, and the two that are in the trunk are for the door speakers and rear speakers. Sounds to me like it's time to get 4 new speakers and bypass the amps.

Once it starts to go out then yes the best way to alleviate the problem is to gut the system and go new. If money is a problem (it is for me) then you can try accessing the amps and making sure the connections are tight. You can also cruise the classifieds to see if anyone is selling their old system. Sometimes you can run across the newer systems like the Mach 1000 cheap. Replacing components of the Mach 460 new would just cost you more than if you pulled the thing out and did your own.
