New to mustangs, new to Stangnet. But learning fast and loving it.
Anyway...
My car is an '88 coupe with a '93 cobra swap (read: x3z computer, 24# inj, cobra upper/lower intake, gt40 heads). I blew a head gasket on that combo right after I bought the car, and decided to go through it a bit. Now the car is pretty much the same, but with a ford reman 306 block and a comp cam (.508/.531 final lift) and cleaned up gt40's.
this car will be a daily driver that I can take to the track on weekends if I want. I want it to have good manners.

Now for my concerns and questions:

I have been having trouble tuning the car (obviously. I'm new. that's a given). But I have done my forum reading and learned that getting these cars to idle properly is no easy task. After plenty of troubleshooting (tps, iac, maf, ignition control module, plug wires, fuel pressure regulator...) I had the car running pretty well. It would idle steadily and had decent power... FINALLY. But after a few times of having to bump start the car and having my battery always drained, I decided to have the alternator tested. It was bad, and I know how poor the performance of the stock alt is, so I got a 94-95 3g alternator and did that swap. After about 15 seconds of idle time with my new 130 amp alt, the car started running terribly and died. When I tried to restart it, it would fire right up sounding healthy, but immediately die instead of settling into an idle. After trying numerous things, I found that pulling the plug on the maf let the car idle and rev happily. So I took it for a drive, just out of curiosity, and felt the most power I have ever felt out of the car. Of course, the power was a bit intermittent and did not come smoothly.. but still I was interested. After doing some research, I found that although I have the 75(?)mm Cobra maf housing, the sensor is from the stock '88 5.0! Now i know that the Cobra computer and MAF in '93 were different from any other 87-93, and that the eec has the correct multipliers for the 24# injectors in the cobra. So here are my questions:

1) The car ran great when I first bought it, how would this be possible with the wrong MAF for the car? Is it possible that this one is communicating correctly with the computer, and I have another problem? I have heard that just because a car runs better when the MAF is unplugged doesn't necessarily mean the MAF is bad. Right now my thought is to just get the correct Ford F1SF-12B579 sensor. Any knowledge on this? I have properly cleaned the sensor I have.

2) I plan on buying either a twEECer or quarterhorse tuner in time, and doing this thing right. Is there a MAF that would be easier to make adjustments with? Will my x3z computer give me problems when I try to tweak my tune?

Thanks guys for any help. I don't know how to thank everyone in this community enough for the knowledge I've already gleaned.

Also, know that I am on a budget.. I can't be spending 250 dollars on an aftermarket maf, unless it's a necessity. And to my understanding, I don't think i need to. Thnaks!

It would be great to see if you had an O-scope to see what kind of analog signal that meter was giving you through the rpm band.

From my experience, the MAF does not give a bad situation, even when dirty I have yet to have one which degrades performance to such an extent that you are describing. BUT I will not rule out any shorts or breaks in the wiring.

As for the computer, I was always told to go the basic route, and stay away from the cobra computer system unless I was building a cobra to keep it that way. So my best advice, would be to go to a stock Mass Air computer (i.e. A9L, A9S, etc.) and that way the market is easier to navigate for you. I don't know what you would have to go through to get something to work if you decided later on to upgraded injectors or something like that.

Good Luck, hopefully someone else may chime in with some more helpful information.

Having been down the TwEECer road, I would tell you to AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I've not played with the quarter horse or its software so can't attest. There's a dude on this forum that goes by the name of vristang that's met the TwEECer with success.

Me.. too stupid. I opted for the PMS. The simpler, the better.

I've owned the PMS and currently we have a twEECer on board. I was more of PMS guy and my buddy is twEECer so he's tuning the car with that currently. I will say it's saved us lots of headache with the 92GT. First off we changed the injectors and you can set injector calibration with the twEECer, nice feature, no need to send a meter back for recal. Also just setting the car up after all the engine mods was a breeze. We didn't have to chase anything down. Set TPS, check injector pulse, check O2's, check MAF, what a tool. Car idles like a champ. Just my two cents.

Hey Vibrant,

What version of the PMS did you have? You can load a xfer function in ver. 4.

I had the older version in my 94GT. Worked well for me but I sold the car with it as it was tuned with the 347 stroker. Even had the older style controller. I did like the PMS very much though. However with the twEECer there is data logging and more visual options.

Thanks for all the advice. VibrantRed, that looks like fun. The PMS system looks much too expensive, though. Plus I am a computer guy anyway, I'd love to tune on the fly with my laptop. Also, would you agree with Tenorplayinguy about just going to an a9l? or would tweecing be just as easy with the cobra computer?
And if I were tweecing, would it matter what MAF I bought? Or can I change all its' settings to make just about any MAF sensor communicate correctly?

Steven, you can make changes on the fly. I'd Google twEECer and hit up the forums and read up first before you buy. If it's something you can do and have interest then go ahead and purchase. I agree the PMS is steep. I actually found mine here on the Classifieds and bought it for $450 which was the same for a new twEECer at the time. Got some knowledge from the tuning sections here on the forums and by some people running it. In fact I had two members send me their tunes and the car responded and ran like a champ. The twEECer is not a system I'm extremely familiar with, in fact the guy in those pics aren't me (friend, Green94 5.0). He's good with the twEECer. Had a rich condition, turn down the fuel by 15% in 2 seconds. Problem with the MAF fuel / air ratio, realized at that point the stock MAF is not good for our Vortech Supercharger set up so we got a 90MM Lightning MAF. Without the datalogging capability we'd be in real trouble tracing down lots of driveability issues. In our mind the twEECer has paid for itself big time. The car wouldn't even idle after all the engine work. Datalogging found all our issues. Do some reading and see if this is for you.

Awesome. Sounds like what I need.. this car is running so rich I can almost taste the gas in the air haha. I will do some good reading on all the systems before I make a decision, but I'm liking the way the tweecer sounds right now. But I do need to get a maf pronto, what do you suggest for tuneability?

Look into Megasquirt. They have a facbook coupon for 18% off right now and it eliminates the headache, cost and restriction of a MAF all toghether.

Is this as simple as it seems?
MegaSquirt-II V3.57 plug and play for 1986-1993 5.0 Mustang DIYAutoTune.com
I like the idea of getting rid of my maf and "lame" cobra computer in one step... and being able to just plug and play, almost. Thanks for the recommendation man I didn't know these kits were available.
Does the software come with?

so if megasquirt replaces the ecu, would it still need the tweecer? (or quarterhorse) or would the megasquirt allow for all the same adjustments? for example... if i build a 408, will it need tweecer tuning if i get the megasquirt ecu? is there any advantage to just the megasquirt over a stock A9L with tweecer?
