Magnaflow stainless 2.5 kit and convertibles

For about $900.00, I had a custom 2 1/2 exhaust with a custom x-pipe installed with dual 3 chamber flow masters. That included the installation (but not the purchase) of new Hooker Competition headers as well.

Just giving you a reference on price for a custom versus off the shelf.

I have there 2.5 stainless kit on my car... it was only $450 from summit. I have a 67 coupe and it did not have any mods. I would only imagine something around the convertible specific structures that there would be modifications. I had to fit and trim the pieces that hooked to the headers, and that was it. The rest was just fit and clamp... no troubles and worth every penny. I think 900 is way to much for a regular steel exhaust.

I can handle dropping the center plate

but not hacking apart the convertible subfloor - I guess it hinges on whether or not the exhaust becomes too wide for the tranny tunnel + the subfloor extending below it where the x-pipe, etc, cross that area.

I can handle dropping the center plate but I don't want to hack apart that subfloor. Well, I guess I am already hacking into it with my subframes that will go through it. I guess I could call it a wash and dent in the subfloor to gain clearance . . .

It seems like that would be a cheaper route to go in the worst case. If I were a TOTAL perfectionist I would go for the custom, but I think down there I could handle denting it in. IF that's what we're talking about . . .

Hello, convertible magnaflow kit users? anybody out there? bueller?

Is it a big deal running a 67 drop top with-out the center plate (I am thinking you are talking about the 10 lb square piece that bolts over the drive shaft)? I haven't had mine installed in years...

adds rigidity, driveshaft safety

I would assume that it adds rigidity, boxing in the trans tunnel in the middle, and adds a certain amount of driveshaft safety - it would catch it if the front yoke broke, I imagine.

But as far as rigidity goes, it would seem that those underseat subfloors they put in from the factory would be just dead weight if they weren't connected to each other - a big bump at the front drivers' side wheel, for example, would lift up that corner of the car and travel through the body, pulling up and to the left on that floor pan. The plate would transfer that force over to the other side and "box" everything in more.

Here's an experiment - imagine some kind of expanding rod that you could adjust from the center. Put that in between the left and right underseat subfloor, WITHOUT any rubber bumpers or anything at the end. Tighten it to where it stays in, but not too tight. Drive around and take some bumps. If it falls out, the plate helps. :D

If you need any measurements of them installed on a 70 mach, let me know. I had one helluva headache with my exhaust guys installing them onto Hooker Comp headers. It was more the header's location than the pipes. Had to dent the pipe to get it past the transmission body crossmember. From what i can tell, the X-pipe would probably land right at the floor reinforcement panel. Again if you need any measurements or pics let me know.

on my 67... no fit problems and it has an AOD in there too. It was plenty wide around the trans and the x-pipe portion cleared. The tail pipes cleared the extra efi pump, and rear sway bar. All I really need to do is get some oval shaped tips to match up with the rear GT valance.

just ordered, got a great deal, hope they fit.

Resurrecting this thread from the dead since I just ordered a set (check www.vintage-mustang.com) and their forums for a steal of a deal. Some way, somehow, I'll make this work, or sell the kit for what I paid for it if it looks impossible.

But, if anyone has done the install, it sure would help. GNN60GT500, any more info on what modifications are needed for a convertible? I ordered the 2.5" kit for '67-70.

At the least, I'll have a nice stainless steel jigsaw puzzle. :D

Any updates?

no, I haven't even gotten the kit yet, missed UPS on Friday. It won't be done until at least after my Watt's is put in, so not for another month or so. If interested in the deal, though, search VMF for "magnaflow" for a sweet deal on the kit!

OK...thanks for the info. I had a Magnaflow setup on my last Mustang and loved it. I would love to put another one of their products on my '70.

just a quick note - GNN60GT500 is probably getting back to me with some of the modifications needed, and certainly I will post pics of my install once I get it done. The Magnaflow kit is the hot ticket, and I think a lot of convertible owners are on the fence and hoping it will be a painless install. It's certainly a great deal if it doesn't require too many mods. Won't get it in for a few weeks at least though, I am in PA for a surgery my mother is undergoing.

$370 shipped is a good deal. I know a company that's been willing to give me a great deal for Magnaflow products. I ordered the cat-back kit for the 2000 Mustang GT I used to have and it was around $340 shipped. That was 3+ years ago.

I just contacted them today and asked for the kit for my '70 vert and they said $370 shipped. Actually, they gave me and a friend of mine who's restoring a '73 Challenger the same price for both of our kits. Let me just say that he was happy I was able to save him over $100.

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I'm probably going to order the kit just because of the price. If it works, great...I'll install it. If not, I'm sure I can find someone to take it off my hands for about what I paid for it. The catch is that I'm not even close to starting exhaust work. There are so many other things needing attention on my car before I go down that path. Then again, $370 shipped is too good of a price to pass up and take the chance of it going up, considering today's steel price trends.

Keep us posted...especially the mods to get it to work.

I wonder if anyone has thought of doing a custom subframe connector instead of modifying the exhaust system? I mean, you could probably do the standard 'vert subframe connectors, but remove the center reinforcement plate and weld in a couple of bars (that work around the exhaust line) to take it's place. I'm just thinking out loud.
