Magnet in pumpkin cover?

Hey guys, I gotta Durrrrrrr question for you.

It's been a couple years since I had an 8.8" pumpkin cover off (on the '88), and since then I've been inside other Makes' covers (to muddy the waters in my mind).
I had the '94's cover off and there was no round magnet inside the pumpkin cover. Was there one OEM? I thought there was, but I might be thinkin of one of the GM's instead.

Not that I can recall. B/C I remember scrubbing the inside of my diff when i swapped gears due to caked on residue.

Maybe GM knows what POS's the make and have to keep the metal out of the system Nevertheless a good idea.

i'm pretty sure mine has one. easy way to tell is if it has a dimple in the lower part of the cover.

whell.....we know why GM has magnets....
Those rearends explode so much that you need something to hold the metal to the cover so its easy to remove.

I know that when I did a tranny flush on my '91 Bronco, the E4OD had a magnet in it.

I actually really like the idea of a magnet in there - they always come out fuzzy. I'm wondering if a larger neodynium magnet placed on the outside of the cover would do nothin. Probably not, given the viscous fluid and having the magnet physically in the cover is what seems to maintain the attraction.

I really thought I had one on the 88. I'll look for a dimple (the 94's cover definately didnt have one).

Think it would be safe to epoxy/jb weld one on the back cover

Grady, that's what I'm not sure of. I very well might cuz it aint gonna hurt nothing, and if it helps..............

I personally think it's stupid to not have one in OEM fashion (though it wouldnt suprise me if girdles dont have a provision for a magnet either). With easy fluid swaps, who cares I guess.

Oh yeah Grady - I thought you meant to put a honkin-magnet on the outside of the cover (the 'no harm' part). You were getting all precise about it and I didnt realize that.

I'm even hinky about having OEM magnets stay put on their dimple - I'm not about to set some oddball magnet inside the cover. I dont really wanna dump the fresh Redline juice out of it anyhow.

Back to the original topic. Since my diff cover was leaking, I did a gasket and fluid change last night.

The fill plug (towards the front of the car) on my 1994 8.8" rear had a magnet attached to the back.

So yeah, we've got a magnet, but it's permanently attached to the fill plug, not mounted to the cover.

I've seen the cover-mounted magnets catch some decent 'grey matter' so I had just wanted to know if I was missin out on something I should have.

Fix a fairly large magnet in the middle of the cover ... on the outside.

Then get a pair of those panty hose (WOO HOO!) that come in those big chrome eggs.

Glue half of the egg over the magnet.

Peeps are gonna be askin about it

And since you've already crossed the line.

Just by modifying the words you use to explain what you did to your car it can make it sound more exciting (and less like working on your car).

Example
"It took me three hours, but I finished replacing the gasket and changing the fluid in my differential at 11:00pm the other night."

Versus:
"The other night I was on my back working on a fine rear-end from 8-11."
