Making your own CAI for a fox mustang.

Has anyone done it? any pics of your setup. I was wondering if you can make your own cai for a foxbody mustang" i know the body style doest matter" could you just use manderl bends for the intake? What would be the best Inner diameter tubing for an intake?

You will want to match the diameter of the MAF/TB as close as possible.

I have several feet of mandrel bend tubing for when the motor is done, as I couldn't find any 'kits' that were as large as I wanted.

if you look at pics of the cheap ebay ones you could make on easy...but the clamps and silicone connectors is what you would need to find. I was just going to buy a cheap one from ebay and copy the tubes with aluminum and tig it togeather and use the hardware the kit comes with.

naah use PVC pipe and electrical tape, you will gain 20+HP..or does that only work with imports?

My 5.0 came with a ghetto-rigged intake with what looks like some corrugated dryer hose and pvc to relocate the filter to the fender. I can get pics if you're interested.

i made my own

i had a cheap ebay CAI before, i got bored and made this one, i went off the Ebay one to make this, it may hurt performance with all the jagged turns but i like the fabricated look with all the welds and i doubt you could tell a HP difference on a dyno at all.

i bought the material online, i sized it to the MAF inlet and outlet so its a smooth transaction all the way through the tube. and then i layed it all out, figured out the angles and cut them up and welded them together.

i got alot of complitments on it, they ask where i got it and i tell them i made it myself they freak out.
i work at a shop that makes oil pans and valve covers so thats where i welded it up at. i am planning to make some nice looking VCs for my car sometime.

That's some nice welding there Foxfan. I like that intake. It would be interesting to dyno that thing on an otherwise stock 5.0 to see what kind of gains it could make.

Very nice welds FoxFan, maybe I'l just tack my kit up and ship it to you with a $20 in it to finish it?

On a serious note, what size is the tubing? what kind of tubing, like is it just exhaust tubing? Why didn't you just buy some mandrel bent tubing and cut it up to avoid all the welding? Nice work man, very nice work indeed.

I would buy one of thoose from you foxfan....just no need for the maf section lol. I would rather the fabed look....BTW very nice job on the tig. I can do some nice work on the tig but I think you got me beat

Why does everyone want to make a CAI the car comes with a great on from the factory the STOCK AIR BOX is a CAI now if your wanting the "looks and sometimes acrap idle " then ok i see why (looks that is) but CAI just don't seem worth it to me I have changed them and even dyno tested them and no power gain was to be found ...just my 2 cents and not trying to flame anyone i had put many CAI on till I found out the gains from it and the money I wasted

x2 stock box is a GREAT cheap CAI that will do just fine for an n/a 302/306 HCI car. I run it with the C&L 'power pipe' and air feed is not an issues at all.

I bought a cheap CAI with the filter relocated to inside the fender... there was no performance gain (from what I can tell) but it will clean up the engine bay alot. I bet you could make a "ram air" style air intake with the stock box, better flowing tube from the box to the TB and fabbing another box that fits inside the fender (which is hooked to the plastic stock box (has large air opening) and running a tube from a fog light hole to that new box.

The stock air box is already a pretty decent CAI once you get rid of the air silencer. The only problem with the stock setup is the ribs in the intake tube. I'm going to try to cut out the ribbed section and replace it with an aluminum tube - The problem is finding the right size tube and a good way to seal it. I'm trying to avoid clamps and hoses.

Any suggestions?

A lot of people just gut the stock air silencer and run a hose from it to the fog light hole - that's a pretty simple ram-air set-up, but I don't really see the point of ram-air systems since you'd have to be driving fast already to get any type of benefit from them.

Well im doing it so i can get some cold air for the motor and clean up the engine bay. Plus i love making my own stuff for my cars.
Update i odered some manderl bends should be here on the 9th. ill update again soon.

Yeah but dont the Ricer Kids get like 20 HP extra just by Sticking a short piece of pipe with a Open Filter Element right next to the Block, LOL?
