Manual Steering again

I thinking of going back to a manual steering box instead of the Flaming River rack and pinion system which I now have installed on my 67 fastback. I don't like the feel of this system at highway speeds 50-60 mph. Too touchy and that flying by the seat of your pants feel.
Because I have headers, we had to use a couple of the universal joints on the steering shaft. It gives a little amount of play at the steering wheel which I cannot work out of the system. I dumped the old box (long shaft) not the safest box to have installed. Any ideas on a real good manual box? I have no room for a power pump. Thanks

You can buy rebuilt short shaft boxes from Chockostang. Posts on here sometimes, also sells on ebay. Stanger also posts here and has a rebuilding service. They are a wealth of information.

I think the consensus is that a quality rebuild is better than a new box from Flaming River.

I'm not sure how much safer the short shaft box is without a collapsible column.
