I have an '87 notch that has manual windows, power door locks. I have a pair of doors from an '89 mustang with power windows, power door locks. I want to swap the doors so I have the power windows. Would they plug right in or is the wiring harness different?

Take the power stuff from the doors you have. It should all swap over, but I don't know if the power harnesses are there in your 87, so you may have to run some wires.

Would it be easier to swap over the power window stuff or just swap the whole door? The car is getting repainted anyways, so the different color door won't matter.

Get the door harness, regulator and motor out and use it all.

Has anybody done this I'm thinking about buying a coupe that has manual windows which I hate. Should I just find doors for my 89 or should I do all the guts from a donor door? I like projects but, hate digging my arm in a door and getting all scrapped up. I like to keep the vin #'s the same.

Just swap the doors, will be alot easier and alot less time consuming, unless you are wanting to keep the originals

Yes, I put in power windows/locks on my car when I got a much nicer power interior. Everything swapped in just fine, but it did take a bit of work. Remove the manual regulators and install the power ones, install the lock actuators, run the wiring through the door and install the rubber cover in the door opening (mine was a PITA since I couldn't get the car side to fit right). Then you need the wiring harness from door to door, it runs right below the windshield under the dash, and connects to the main harness with a two wire plug in the driver's kick panel. Then you need the power window circuit breaker for the fuse box, it is a silver rectangular box.

Good luck!

I was told long ago that ALL Mustangs have the harnesses inside the kick panels for power doors because Ford didn't make different harnesses just for the power door optioned cars. However, i've never searched a manual door car to see if this is true or not.

FWIW i have a write up on going power to manual that may help you understand what you need to do to go the other way around. http://forums.stangnet.com/760333-power-manual-windows-how-check-out.html

On my car the only options were 5.0, AC and radio, so it did not have the power door wiring at all. It is a totally separate wiring harness that plugs into the main harness with only a two wire connector, and all of the cars I pulled power door stuff from (89-92 models) had the same setup. I'm sure Ford designed the separate harness to save a few cents on the non power cars, but maybe they just put it in all cars later on.

Now in the later cars maybe they used the same basic main wiring harness for the inside of the car. I know when I put in power mirrors I had to pull the mirror wires from a donor car, and it was imbeded with all the other wiring under the console. Again, my car did not have the power mirror wiring, but it does have the power hatch wiring, some defroster wiring (but no relay) and the fog light wiring.

Anyway, might be worth it to look in the kick panel to see if you have the two wire plug sitting there, or if there is a wiring harness plugged into it under the dash before you have to tear apart a donor car to get it.

^^ What i meant was all cars have provisions for power doors...not the actual door harness tucked away in the kick panel. I'm saying they should all plug in and go.
