Manual transmission?

Alright guy, I have a question and please dont laugh! I want a manual transmission in my 66. But i am going to eventually have a lot of power comin its way, so the T5 is out, the T6 is out because i dont want to bang on my floor to fit it. so that leaves me with a toploader right... this brings me to my question, What all came with the toploaders and what other transmissions could work? what about a 4 speed from a 1970 F100? (i can find lots of these on ebay for not too much) of course it would need to be rebuild with more appropiate gears but how would that handle/fit with my car? I am sticking a 351W in that will eventually be stroked out to 427. I have my heart set on a manual and dont really mind not having an OD gear...

If you are going to drive the car outside of the city limits, you want an OD gear. There are performance upgrades available for the T5, as well as other manual transmissions to look into. One of which is a Tremec. I have pretty much decided that I will go with a Tremec for my W when it's time.

Or, you could go with a Ford 3+1 OD. It looks just like a Toploader, but has an OD 4th gear. Not quite as strong as the typical toploader, but still pretty sturdy.

Do a search on the board, there are a lot of links available for researching the swap to a manual trans.

I understand that the T5 can be made to handle what i am going to throw at it but i have yet to find one that needs some work that is even close to $500 then the rebuild on top of that would run me a good bit... where as i can find these 4 speed manuals out of 60s model trucks for 200 all day long. Guess what i should have asked is what is the difference between those and a toploader? and will they fit? and what are these transmissions if they arent toploaders?

truck transmissions tend to have a very low first gear to the point where your actually start off in second gear for normal operation. you might consider using the richmond 4+1 5 speed. these are tough transmissions that will handle the power you are planning to make. they also fit the mustang trans tunnel nicely, and have a 1:1 top gear. you can also pick your first gear ratio so that you can have a freeway rear end gear, and still have enough first gear to make it seem like you have 4.11 gears. check out summit racing as they carry the transmissions and shifters.

Mustangs, Cougars, Fairlanes, Falcons, Torinos, Comets, all used basically the same thing. However, only the Mustang and Cougar had the shifter mount located at the extreme rear end of the tailshaft housing. You would need to change the housing on others, unless they also had the mounting holes there.

Transmissions from other sources may share some parts, but as mentioned above are likely to have the wrong length, or gearing, etc. Mustang 4-speeds are not hard to find, really.

rbohm- thanks for that tip i will look into that! i have been searchin the forums and found a lot of references to david kee and have been looking at that as an option as well.

2+2GT- maybe i am just not lookin in the right places! ebay doesnt seem to have too many, I have found one but havent decided to bid yet still doing some research but i would like to go junk yard shoppin but kinda hard for me considering my current address!

thanks for the help, anyone with any other ideas bring it on, it will be a while before i actually get to put my hands on this so i dont need to buy right now anyway got plenty of time to think about it!

what about a T10 tranny? does it fit is it worth rebuilding to put in? Strength parts availablity? opinions? just tryin to sort out all my options on this one...

The T10 was not quite as strong as the Ford, and had a slight tendency to come out of gear when the throttle was released suddenly, but this can be corrected. The Super T10 was much better. Both the Super T10 and Toploader are available new.

yeah it is quiet annoying! there are many forum pages and such that i cant go to because it is social networking but i got lucky with this one! and a lot of business websites i cant get to for one reason or another... but i am going on R&R in a few days so i will be chilling on the beach in Australia and doing more research!

If it only needs minor stuff, such as F/R seal and alip yoke bushing, You got a major bargain.

i say minor but i think it was the sync between 2 and 3 that was a little messed up and a chip off the crossmember mount onthe tail shaft but i dont think it will be too bad to correct...

it has a tag on it that reads HEH D 022791, said it came from a 1964 Galxie with a 390 here is a picture of the problem gear/sync thing.

that being said and shown... can you give me some ideas as to what the different gears ratios were for this model (if it is even that model). also since that part is bad and will likely need to pull everything out to fix (why not just do a rebuild) any reason i cant change up the ratios a little bit and some recommendations on gears for this and my rear?! I know i ask a lot of y'all but y'all know so much more than me! haha thanks for all the help y'all give me!

Sorry to bust your bubble, but that Toploader ain't gonna fit your 66. The Galaxie Toploader is 3" longer and the 390 specific Toploaders have a shorter front snout on the input shaft that prevents it from extending into the pilot bearing/bushing when used with a small block bellhousing.In addition to that, it's probably also a close ratio unit with the taller 2.32 first gear, you want a wide ratio unit with the 2.78 1st. There were only two gear spread combinations for production Toploaders, these are it. rbhom has a small block toploader for sale for about the same price, PM him.
