i've gotta canton 7qt pan on my new 306, i gotta mark the dipstick for full but just wanna make sure i got the right idea first. Figure I'd put 7qts in it and mark the stick before starting it. Is this the way to do it or am i missin somethin here? Thanks for any help here guys
probably doesnt matter if u start it, as long as you do the same thing every time (ie measure after started, or before)... but im not a pro... so someone else mite have a better solution.

i would figure the stock pan oil level (absolute level - or level of oil below the crankline) would be the same with any pan (you fill it as much as you can, while keeping the oil out of the crank reciprocating mass. so would the full mark still not work (ie keep filling till the dipstick reads full).
otherwise, i would contact the vendor and ask to be sure. or figure out the oil level on the old pan, where it was full. then figure out how much you can fill the new sump to achieve the same level from the crankline.

oh yeah, i prefer to check oil level on a cold motor (ie sat overnight). so unless your oil filter is dry (you just changed it and have not started it), you could use this method . i dont know the 'best', most perfect way to check the level - warm motor after sitting for a few minutes (like most sportbikes, per the owners manual) or after overnight.
I've heard the best way to check the oil is after it's sat so that the oil all runs back down to the pan. I'd mark the dipstick before driving after a change, but let it sit an hour or two to let it drain. The stock dipsticks are notoriously off, so it might be a good idea to mark the dipstick w/ or w/o a new pan.
well i cant go off the full line of the dipstick b/c it's a universal stick for canton pans and it's different between motors i'm assumin. since it's advertised as a 7qt pan thats why i was thinkin i could put 7qts in and mark the stick. Thanks guys
