I have a 88' LX with a 5speed. It has speed density. How much of a difference would it make if I converted to mass air???? What is a good price to pay new/ used? Should I try to get a specific size mass air meter????Thanx, Joe
there is only an advantage to the swap when the modifications leave you with a car that is becoming a problem. The problems are most often the result of a cam change that doesn't provide the vac readings the computer needs to determine operating perameters. Head/intake/exhaust...near all boltons will work well with SD. There are cams that will provide the info the computer needs to operate well under SD also. SD cars have even been known to run quicker than MAF cars, not much, not always..but sometimes. Basically what I'm saying is you don't need the switch untill times comes that it's required...I converted to accomdate the engine I was installing otherwise I'd still run SD.
The only difference it made for me was idle quality. SD cars tend to hunt for idle some times. You can get an IST wire kit, MAF calibrated for your injectors, and an A9L EEC. Check ebay for parts.

I'am going to switch my 87' notchback into mass air. I heard you get all around better drivability(better idle, better gas mileage, etc.). Is this not true?
not true for me at all...you shouldn't have any 'issues' as is...car if maintained should run as well as it did new. If conversion to mass air helps anything out then it's just bandaiding a problem rather than fixing it. A well tuned car will perform and get as good milage as it did new.
