What the max amount of hp and tq a 5.4 2v with a stock rotating assembly can handle, the 4.6 2v is like 450 at the crank so id think it be less with the longer rods, maybe im wrong??
 
It will be roughly the same hp limits as the 4.6. The limiters again being the connecting rods / pistons.

If you are dropping in a 5.4 you have a sizeable bottle neck if you are using the stock 2v heads. Most say it even isn't worth the trouble to swap from 4.6 2v to 5.4 2v. Your 5.4 will do much better off with some better flowing heads + decent performance cams (not the stock truck cams that probably came with the 5.4). Look at the trickflow heads / a 4v swap if you haven't already. :nice:

Yes the 5.4L connecting rod is ~0.6" longer because the stroke is ~0.6" longer (3.54" vs 4.16"). The pistons are the same because the bore is the exact same between the two (3.55"). The 5.4L is overall wider when fully dressed. Like nightfire said- these engines are pretty much the exact same except for the stroke difference and the outside dimensions.

if you are thinking about doing this swap there are a couple of fine points and limitations but overall most pieces directly transfer over... and if you are using a 4.6 to transfer parts from than I wouldn't transfer over the internal pieces.... why not go forged? :)
 
thats my plan i have a used set of ported pi's and gonna pick up some cams, HPS intake manifold, maybe 24# 30# injectors, and other supporting mods. i know it wont make power like any push rod h/c/i setup but its a daily driver and has some of that wow factor cause its not really that common like supercharged 4.6 is.

4.6 will make just as much power as the 5.4. Slap that on a used NPI block and get the compression increase. Car should run forever with a good tune.
 
Usually people increase the stoke on an eninge that has a bigger bore than stroke. They increase the bore when stroke is longer than bore.

Increasing the stroke on an engine that has the same bore and stroke is regressing. Yes, you get more displacement, but you have not gained anything from a performance aspect. If your main goal is towing, I say go for it. :nice:

I'd rather have a blown 4.6 than a N/A 5.4.

If eye-candy and "wow factor" is your goal ( :nono: ), again, a blower under the hood is going to impress more than a stock-appearing long-block; you're going to have to explain to everyone it's a 5.4 since visually the two are nearly indistinguishable unless you have a tape measure and check the height and width...

I would do more research if I were you on pricing, I just did a quick search and this is what I cam up with minus all the time and labor.

Got motor for $100 from friends salvage yard, already have the pi heads assembled (been in my garage for couple of years), gonna use 24# injectors off my Mach

heads an valve train-nothing
cams- 400 to 500 used
timing parts- already have everything
HPS-700
injectors-nothing
parts-lets say 400
tune-200 an buy my friend dinner so 250
complete engine-100 85,xxx miles

and labor is free cause im doing it so lets say an even $2000

For the heads are they ported like you want, because they will cost about 500 to 800 to have a local shop port them. Or about $1200 on a trade in program.

For timing parts do you have the Romeo? Because the 5.4 is a Windsor block and they have pressed on timing gears they you can not use on an aftermarket cam. Plus you must degree your cams, and that requires some equipment.

A engine with 85,000 I would replace all the timing components with new items, a new oil pump as well as fresh gaskets all around. Cheap insurance to make sure you don't have to pull it out down the road.


I forgot to add that you will need to modify the exhaust in some fashion, Long tubes will not work and the H or X pipe needs to be widened.

my heads flow over 220cfm intakes 180cc exhaust 65cc, i have a Windsor for that very reason pulled timing cover and all parts look great no issues, motor reved good before it was pulled. got some upper lower an rear main seal gasket set for 250, and i know how to degree cams and have the tools so no worries there. i know Lt's are out but write ups have said JBA or Ford racing work good for fitment and best part i bought an o/r H from someone who did this swap so im good there. all totaled maybe go just over $2100
