Maybe a common problem?

Ive done extensive searches on this site to try and figure out what could be possibly wrong with my car. Posted several times before, explaining that i have a crazy idle, loss of power, stalling, i cant even take it out of my driveway. Thought it was the fuel, so i replaced the filter along with the pump(walbro 190lph), put new gas in. All these things to no avail.

So now im looking through StangNet searching for possiblities, and looks like one of them could be an ignition pickup. Stator i believe you guys call it. My question to you guys is... is it possible for me to replace this pickup without removing the distributor?

Tried to replace it last night but a plate was blocking my access to the stator. Any help on this is really appreciated. Im hitting a wall here.

The stator going is somewhat common....From what I have seen and read the dizzy has to be out as the gear has to be removed to replace the stator...If thats not your gig, get a rebuilt dizzy and be done with it ?
FWIW...have you tried to pull the codes yet? that stator going South should leave a memory code...

No i havent pulled codes yet. Went to the auto parts store to buy and OBD I but no one has one. They only come with OBD I and II which is like 400 bucks. Really appreciate the help guys. Ill do anything right now to get this fixed. Even if i have to spend big money on a scanner.
Tried to take the dizzy out. But the bolt holding the clamp down isnt budging. Took two ours last night just trying to loosen it and plenty PB Blaster but nothin. Just got to keep trying i guess. PITA.

You can pull codes with a paper clip.

Ive replaced the stator in my distributor. I pulled the distributor to replace mine. I would highly recommend marking where the distributor was when pulling it. After pulling the distributor, you probably will have to pull the gear off too. That is a b*tch. You have to use a press and be careful not to mess it up. Also, do you have a chip? My superchip went bad and would cause my car to buck and would throw the tach up and down like crazy.

A bearing splitter works well for removing the gear.
The PIP would not have been my first guess though.

As everyone wisely said, I would get codes and go from there.

Pulling the codes was my first intention. l called the parts store before i went, just to make sure they had an OBD I there. They said "yeah sure, it even has a screen."
Cool, go over there. " O sorry its and OBD II"

While i had already wasted a trip i figured id see if they had an iginition pickup since i remember through other posts our cars had issues similar to mine because that went bad.
They actually had one.
I went there to pick up a scanner to save myself some trouble, end up taking that peice home, and getting myself back into my usual throwing tools around and cursing rediculous amounts because i just want my car fixed again. :bang:

Thanks for all the help though guys. Im always amazed at the response.

And HISSIN I dont have a chip(YET) :D

Hence getting a rebuilt....Save your self the greif.... :D Sears has the Actron readers for like 25.00 or so....
The one CT mentioned would be nice to...that way you wouldn't have to throw chit around when you get the sequence wrong... :damnit:

Yeah i have the stock TB layin around, but i put that in about a year ago now. I guess ill give it a try if this distributer thing dosent work out.

Last night i got the distributor out, pulled the gear off with a bearing splitter, changed the PIP, now just have to put it back in and fire it up.
Its tough because i work all day and only have a couple of hours to work on this thing. I guess its better to take my time then rush into things and screw the sequence up (RIO). :D

I put my money on the stator. If you pop the cap off and it's loose at all then it's definitely bad. If it's not loose then simply do this...pull the cap off, take the rotor off and you'll see a little wheel(armature) there are 2 tiny screws holding it on. Take them out and clean the teeth of the armature with some emory cloth or sand paper. Throw it back on and try it. If this is what the problem is go to NAPA and get a new one. They are the only parts store I know of that sells the armature. Here is the part no. for you ECHMP723 and here is the part no. for a new dizzy NRD482888. You do have to remove the dizzy to replace the stator and it's a PITA so just replace the whole thing and be done with it. If this isn't your problem then try cleaning your MAF sensor, your IAC and lastly your TPS might be bad...Good Luck
