My buddy has a 79 5.0 that's stroked out to 306 ci, has gt40 heads, and a cam (he doesn't know which one). Now I know I definately wouldn't beat one ordinarily, but his isn't in the best shape and has a 4cyl suspension (it's converted) so he has NO traction. It's also carbed and not really tuned very well. Any chance of me beating him?

Well... a 306 is not stroked, it's bored.

I would imagine (if he can drive and has traction) that he will get the jump and keep it through the mid part of his power band. You should be able to reel him in on the top end. This assumes a cam that's commensurate with the GT-40 heads and induction.

If you manage to get the jump on him, you should be able to stay out front and start walking him toward the top.

Your 15.831 doesn't bode well for you though. hehe

I'll take a wild guess and say that he's prolly at the shallow end of 14s or better.

If memory serves, four cyl. springs on a Fox help it launch better, just handle worse. Am I wrong?

Eh i dunno...too many variables here. I've seen cammed and GT-40 headed 5.0's struggle to get into the high 14's.

Your 15.3 doesn't really help much.

5.0's are tough to judge. You can line up next to one and it has just as much of a chance of banging off an 11-second timeslip as it does running 15.5's.

I think the best I ran with my 5.0 was a 15.0 and it was the stock motor with minor bolt ons. Like said above, I have seen 306's run into the high 15's and high 13's so it really depends on what he has that will compliment the heads he has. heads arent any good unless the intake, carb, and cam let them breath better. Good luck. and yes a 4cyl suspension is suppse to help launch better. Plus if he has the 7.5 rear I think he will have a 355 or 373 gear set as well but I am not sure on that. Been awhile since Ihave tinkered with one.

Ok let up on him a little his 94 MPH trap speed tells me 1. he is the worst driver in history or 2. he lives in a high altitude. 15.00 might be normal for a gt up there.

Where do you live mr game.

Atco or Englishtown? I've only run at Atco and have heard that Atco has better track prep than E-town.

Anyway, you have fairly minimal perfomance mods, but with what the car starts with plus the mods, still should be right around a low 14s stang. The fox with it's lighter weight and beefed up power, my guess is that it should be mid 13s given it's running right.

IMO, it's a drivers race when they are with a 1/2 sec. of each other.

Maybe you will get lucky and he can't drive for $hit. There is no telling. I have seen so many people with solid 12 second cars running high 13's all the way up to low 15's, they simply don't understand there car and can't transfer that power to the track. Watch him run and if he sucks then you could have a good chance at beating him.
