Methods for getting a Stealth/RPM into a 66 with a 351w

I have a Stealth intake that I want on my 351w in my 66. I am expecting it not to fit as it sits. I have heard of two methods to help this situation… using 65 style motor mounts and using a drop base air cleaner.

My questions:
1) Which method is more effective? Or should I expect to need to do both?

2) Does carburetor style have much impact on clearance (ie, are Holleys taller than Edelbrocks and other carbs)?

3) I heard that while the 65 mounts are better for clearance, they’re also weaker in standard form. Is this true (and of concern)? If so, does anyone sell a stronger version or sell another mount I should look at?

4) I currently have a 14x3” chrome air cleaner, and I like how it looks. The surface that mounts on top of the carburetor is about an inch or two above where the bottom of the filter sits at the outside of the ‘disc’ (sorry, don’t know exactly what all the parts are called… ). Is this a ‘drop-base’ cleaner already? Will it work? Can someone recommend an air cleaner that looks similar that will (if it won’t)?

Thanks, if anything isn’t clear let me know.

either one will fit fine, just use a lo pro air cleaner. Use some play dough and put it on the middle and outer edges of the air cleaner at 12,3,6 and 9 o'clock positions and slowly close your hood and that will give you how much clearance you have. As long as motor mounts are good even a smidge less than 1/2" is ok.

I run a tealth intake on my 351w, and I have a 65. I have a 670 street avenger, with the ford racing oval cleaner. My setup clears easily.

Hope this helps.

Your 65, if im right, has the benefit of slightly lower profile mounts by default though. Good to know just a drop-cleaner would have a shot at clearing though.

I'm pretty sure I did hear about 65 style reinforced mounts... if avaliable they'd be the best of all worlds. Anyone know where such a thing might exist?

Random aside... would the 65 motor mounts help my driveline angle at all (everyone on this board said t5s, in the standard installed position, had slightly high driveline angles... i would think lowering the engine a smidge might help that)?

The pre Feb 66 mounts are good for 1/2" or so.

Drop base with a 2" filter (Use a good hi-flo one) with a large diameter will help too.

The K&N filter lid will also help with air flow.

Try the drop base first. It may cost more, but changing the mounts is a lot harder.

Trust me.....everything in my car has tight clearances. A 1/4" is a huge gap to me!!!

A stealth is no problem in a 351w. Hell, I run a Vic Jr and 1/4" of spacers.

A drop base air cleaner should get you there. If it is not enough, it is possible to modify it even more. Here is my basic write-up on how to do this:

The Holley HP series of carbs are shorter than a standard carb. Can't tell you about the Ebrock.

Yes, the 65' motor mounts will help but shouldn't be necessary. They are weaker, but mine held out until I was running full slicks and launching at 5K at the track with a 4 speed. On the street, they should hold up a long, long, time. If you got 2 bills to drop on them, 1/2" lowered motor markets are available through the aftermarket.

Just for the heck of it, here is a couple of pics of my modified Vic Jr and my old Stealth:

For the pics, both were being supported by the lifter valley rails and the roll of 3/4" tape is there as a visual reference.

I have to remove the 1-inch phenolic spacer on top of the RPM with my 351W. That is in order to clear the 67-Shelby scoop (no way it would clear a stock hood) in a 67!

I'm wondering how much lower the block sits in the 65/66 for you guys to "have tons of room". Maybe the K&N aircleaner and tall element is to blame entirely?

dennis 112, what is the brand of your air cleaner?

It is a combo of parts.

I purchased a complete 14" Holley drop base air cleaner kit in order to just to get the base and the air filter. The base gives about 1 3/4" drop, as is. This kit is a shelf item at our local Advance Auto.

Since I didn't like the raised "Holley" found on that air filter top, I added an old 289 hipo lid.
