not to go against your suggestion, but i've seen two brand new motors from them blown up at a shop being rebuilt the right way (with a better-different motor). again going back to you'll pay for it again most of the time unless you do it right the 1st time

you said a better-different motor..from a shop...could be the shop.. they have their own blocks level 10 and level 20... I would suggest buying direct from them w/forged internals..they blueprint and have their own CNC machine....might have just been a bad experience with the shop, did you use the same shop again? just wondering.

Why aren't more people building their own engines??

Back in the good 'ol days of the 5L, most of us built our own engines and added ported heads cams and a decent intake. This is with a carb or fuel injected.

Today everyone is looking for a engine builder, why? It's still a Ford SB engine. Add a steel crank, good rods and pistons and your half way there. Add a Cobra or billet oil pump and how hard can this build be?

Someone set me straight or simply agree. Is the Mustang crowd getting lazy and turning into the ricer crowd. Those guys need help pumping their own gas.

jeebus...ima just gun do everything myself with possibly the help from my uncle..this would prove to be a lot cheaper

assuming i acutally save up to do my own engine build...which is highly unlikely

you misunderstand me.......the people went through DSS & had it all taken care of. then took it to the shop to get it taken care of the right way. it wasn't the fault of whoever installed the (dss) motor originally, it was the (dss) motor itself at fauly

Actually to race prep, blue print ,balance, line hone and assemble you'll pay $1300 @ any high end race shop.

so $1300
new block $300
Arp main studs $175
and your $1500
= $3275..Now add a good piston like Ross or Diamond and your @ the $3500.
You do get what you pay for.I rebuild alot of "built" cars that are shipped to us.They went the cheap route on machine work and payed for it in the end.
MMR has a good rep as we'll as VT and us.
I build 600-1000rwhp everyday, the quality of the block/machine work is everything. And they are giving you thewhole picture, you don't see bad Threads about VT or us on our engnes.Do a search on all the other boards about econo blocks and see what you find.
You do get what you pay for.Thats prolly why I always have 45 cars here and 20-30 engines on order.VT is the same way and a TOP notch engine builder.

I'm not out here to step on your toes or anyone elses. I would jut like to see a little more critical thinking and a little less selling. I have seen way to many responses lately that are more of a sales pitch than help. Take this for example:

"If I were building another 2V I would go back to Fox Lake. They built my
2V longblock and no one has ever made more power or gone quicker or
faster with a 2V 4.6L That's enough to sell me, how about you?"

If that's not sales language then I don't know what is. Truth is, in the end I will probably have something from you and something from VT, and from my very brief telephone calls with reps from both shops I would recommend you the same as most others on here. However, people should realize there are other options before diving into a $9000 longblock or $3500 shortblock just because it comes from a reputable builder.

As far as your #'s above, why does everyone automatically need a new block? That's $300 less. What is wrong with some nice manley, modmax, or some of the other forged pistons that come in many of the $1500 kits? That's another $225 off the 3500.

I also think you should add the info. on race prep, balance, blueprinting, etc. into the description of your engines. This would help us all put the pricing into a little better perspective. I had no idea you even do this on your street/strip short blocks. Are you saying you do? Your rep. didn't bother telling me about it when I called asking about the street/strip SB. It would also be nice to know if the race prep and blueprinting does anything for us performance wise. As far as I can see, it is just going to strengthen the block. Is this true? If so, I don't think I, or most others, will ever put too much power into a stock block so that work may not be needed. If we do need the extra strength, then why not add a main girdle? There are plenty of like questions to consider.

My point is, there are other options and i.m.o. this should be a forum for helping others, not selling others.

And I was seriously asking the questions above. I would really like to know if these things are done to your street/strip blocks so I can justify the price difference I listed above. Send me a p.m. or email about it so I can get the damn thing ordered. I have to do it quickly before I realize how much my current plans will actually cost me.
