I know this has been talked about many times before but the search button is not cooperating...so I apologize!!! I have the wonderful TREMEC 3650 1-2-3 shifts on cold starts and I'm changing the fluid to Mobil 1 synthetic ATF @ 3.2 quarts. Now, it says automatic transmission on the bottle but the people at auto zone told me that was fine? I told them I had a 5 speed Am I missing something...I don't remember reading about that during earlier searches.

That is what I am using in my T-45. Im not sure if the T-45 and T-3650 take the same type of fluid, but in my owners manual I do beleive it says ATF.

Yes, Mobil 1 Syn. ATF is what is specified in the owner's manual for our manual transmissions.

+1. I know it sounds odd but Ford recommends auto trans fluid in our 5-spd trannys.

To make things more bizarre, ATF is also required in our power steering systems.

Mustangs have been using Automatic Transmission Fluid in manual transmissions since 1984. Nothing new really.

ATF is just thinner than gear oils. Moderns manuals are made with tighter tolerances and gear oil cannot flow well enough to lube up the bearings and such. They use ATF in the design since it is thinner and can flow into the tight areas.

I swapped out my synthetic oil for a non-synthetic coastal dexron III and it worked wonders on the grinding problem! I used 3.2 quarts, but I think I am going to go back and add more because 5th gear sounds HORRIBLE for some reason...
