modular stroker

Im new to this forums idea but here it goes. I have a 99 gt wit the 4.6 and im going to be pulling the motor this winter due to a cracked piston. I am looking at the stroker kits and Am wondering if anyone has ever done this before and has some good advice for me. What are some good brands ect. I have heard taht the 03 cobra oil pump is a good idea as well as something along the lines of kb boost a pump and boost a spark. Other then the block machining what will i need. Also i need this to be reliable as well.

based on the HP results on the stroked 4.6's i am not impressed one bit and would not recommend that as a mod. as for the 'KB boost a spark', i would go with a "plasma booster" over that any day. do a search on this forum for more info on this topic. if you are dead set on a stroker motor, check out www.vtengines.com they have some really good stuff. but i'm with stang976, i'm not that impressed with the stroker numbers, don't get me wrong it's a nice improvement. if it were my money i'd just buy beefed up internals & put boost to it. the reason that the strokers don't make as much power is the 281 block can't be taken out as much as a 302 block could. also the stroke in a 4.6 is already longer than a 302, so it makes modular stroker results not as impressive, comparitivly.

thanx for some of the info its really helping, does anyone know of somewhere that i can get more exact numbers, I am goin to have to replace anyways so should i stroke and then look at a kb or just forge everything, its not that much cheaper for jus forged then the stroker kit as far as i know

check out coasthigh.com. they make a forged stroker shortblock for the 4.6 that costs about the same as a forged 4.6 replacement shortblock. if they cost the same, you might as well, right? i'll let you know how it's holding up in another 3000 miles.

SOUNDS GREAT also im wondering what kind of machine work you did to the block to prep this, as well as oil pumps, gas pumps ect. last thing, did you go with the stroker kit that requires bore or did you choose the stock bore kit

if you've got to replace your internals anyway, you might as well put in a stroker. as far as bang for your bucks, get a blower. but, since you've got a blown piston, you might as well stroke it when you rebuild it.

it's a lot easier to get an assembled and balanced shortblock than to do all the work yourself. you'll have to overbore the cylinders, assemble everything and balance it. personally, i think that doing it yourself is a waste of time and well worth the cost to have the block built. unless, of course, you just love to build engines and you have more time than money.

you'll need a cobra oil pump. while your engine's apart, you'll want to port the heads and put in cams or you'll have an engine that'll make a bunch of torque and no horsepower. it's all depends on what your kit/shortblock comes with but you'll need new headstuds and gaskets, too.

I can't tell what I gained in terms of torque or horsepower with it as I didn't test just the stroker alone. What I base my statement on is another car with the same heads, intake, cams, tb, maf, exhaust, etc, etc as I have, but without the stroker, making 10 more rwtq and only 10 rwhp less and that was with 2 psi less boost. I'd spend the money elsewhere.

As far as porting heads goes I'm an advocate of that but do also recognize that it's not needed to make big power. Case in point is "sheisters" car making 601 rwhp with stock heads and intake.

a lot of companies like probe sell reground stroker cranks, that, ive been told, lose a lot of strength after the whole process. Plus they have more piston speed.

if it was me, and i have thought long and hard about this subject.... .020 over, forged cobra crank, good rods, pistons and be done with it.

ok thanx for the info everyone, I have gotten alot of info, I think im goin to start by pulling the motor and seeing what exactly is the actually problem, then work from there, my biggest problem is money since i am only 17 and i have to pay for my car as well as some thing else to drive and what ever parts i put into it, I am capable of putting the motor togeather my self and my friends have a machine shop in the car club so the balancing is no big deal

for an oil pump use a cobra oil pump and pickup. for fuel pumps, you can use the 03 cobra twin pump setup, or an aviator fuel pump, twin svt pumps work well too.

just looked up the CARB EO number and its only good on 2003 and older vehicles. it appears as though the description is false advertising. saying that it is for 99-04 gt's.
