More rearend woes!

Today I recieved my diff case and I have some simple questions..

1. Do the bolts that hold the ring gear into the diff case thread into the gear itself, or the flange on the diff case?

2. What should those bolts be torqued to?

3. Is there any way to tell whether those bearings that sit on the diff case are good/worn? Any tell-tale signs of a bad bearing?

ok so your using a new carrier. that part where the ring gear bolts to is the carrier. the case is the whole housing

the bolts thread into the ring gear, i would use new bearings, and they are pressed to the carrier. make sure you get new races for the bearings. never use old races with new bearings.

the tourqe spec for the ring gear bolts is 77 foot pounds.

Thanks man. It seems to me that you know your **** inside and out on these cars. Also, I surely need to update my terminology database

no problem. glad to help. some of the terminology i don't know myself. thats when you go to the parts counter and say "you know this thing.. it attaches to this other thing here and does this"

good luck with you rear end build up.

the ring gear torque will depend on the bolt size.


according to fords install instructions here are is there torque table.

7/16 bolt (5/8 head) 60-65lbs
1/2 bolt (3/4 head) 80-85lbs

my stock ring and pinion were 1/2 bolts, my new 3.73 ring and pinion is 7/16 bolts.
