So I was doing some thinking. And before anyone says anything I did some searching but didnt see the answer I was actually looking for in a sense.

My car has a little over 180,000 miles on it. I am quite concern about the block even though it is running strong. SO basically my question is well more like what should I do is.

Should I go buy a block that someone else has taken off there car and bring it to a machine shop to get all new forged parts put in.

or

Should I just go and see what short blocks are available that already are all done up

I dunno see thats why for the topic. Cause I rather take care of this before it does become an issue. BTW my plans for this car is to do the basic mods h/c/i and hopefully by next summer a s/c

Try to get one that comes in built form with all you need already - labor is expensive.

My block has 190,000+ miles on it and still had 150psi cranking compression, so I put new heads and intake on it. Check it with a compression tester and/or a leak down tester to see what condition it's in before spending money you may not need to.......

a block does not get old unless it gets something thrown through it, or an overheating or a bad bearing going unrepaired for a while. you can overbore it if it needs to be

Dude, strap a 150 shot on your motor and race it into the ground. If you've got the money to buy a new motor, let the current motor go out in style! Besides you've going to be pulling the motor either way, so it's not like blowing the thing up first makes a difference.


I'd vote to buy a preassymbled motor from CHP or DSS or some other reputable company. When you do, get a 351W whie you're at it and you'll be set.

that is embarrasing when you blow a motor on the road or in a race when you push the nos button, screw that, waste of time and money

OK i might see embarrassing, but waste of money? If it's a motor you're not going to be using then where's the waste? Maybe you'll burn some juice but it's not like you cant take everything off and put it onto another motor.

my buddy tony is pulling consistent 13.7's in a heavy ass 89 vert, stock long block with 237k original miles intake never off till a couple of weeks back. A well cared for 5.0 engine will last an eternity. If your engine's not showing signs of old age, I wouldn't worry too much about it. At 186k, my 5.0 is still going strong.

mine just hit 77k miles i guess i can stop worrying about it and shift around 4k more often jk looks like i have many many many more miles to go on it, i only put 20k miles on it in 2 years too

232,000 never rebuilt, and mine was pounded into the ground when I bought it at 155,000. Still runs like a raped ape, although I know it's on borrowed time.

Like Tmoss said, have it checked out. If everything is sound, then it's worth investing in. The only downside to rebuilding what you have is downtime. With a crate engine, you can swap it out and be on the road again in a day or two. Rip apart what you've got and machine it, etc... you can be talking weeks. That doesn't mean you shouldn't though.

I got 150,000 on mine so far... and she runs great... just a baby still...haha just buy a crate motor and have at it!

i only got 50k
guess thats what happens when youve had your liscense for 2 months while you owned the car. ive personally clicked 500 of them miles.

i wouldn't really worry about the motor because of the milage. how was the motor taken care of? do the compression test. you could find a motor or block and slowly work on it a while. then when it's finished drop it in.
