Motor Mount troubles

I need advice on where I can find a motor mount that will work with my car. I am running a late model 5.0L engine and T5 trans in my 68 coupe and I am having trouble getting the engine to sit all the way down in the cradle. With the new repo motor mounts installed in my car, the motor sits too high, causing the top of the trans ( passanger side trany lid) to hit the trans tunnel on the car. I feel that the motor is sitting too high causing the transmission interferance, I checked the distance between the oil pan and the crossmember and I have about 2" of clearance. The motor mounts that are in the car now came from a parts store, the parts guy only had one part # for both motor mounts, which seemed odd (I thought the driver side and passanger side mounts were different). These mounts made my motor sit too high and the motor sat closer to the driver side os the car. I bought a new pair of mounts off of Ebay that where supposed to be convertalbe mounts, but they looked the same and did the same thing as the part store mounts. Does anyone have a suggestion, I was thinking about using the Ron Morris mounts, but I hate to drop $200 and find out they don't drop my engine down enough. The car originally had a 289 in it, but those motor mounts where replaced because they where short and I no longer have them.

By the way I am using a modern driveline trans crossmember.

Yes I think your hunch is right. The left side mount should be smaller. That should even it out and drop it low enough for your clearance issue, especially since you said the clearance is also on the left side. This is a shot in the dark but can they be shaved down?
 
Well here is the deal with that. The car was in a bad accident about 7 years ago, and I had the passanger side shock tower replace with a shock tower from the junk yard. The donor car was a Cougar, but I am not sure if it was a 68 or a 67 Cougar. The passanger side is the side I am having trouble with, I checked all the measurements with the measurements provided in the service manual and they all check out, also the passanger side shock tower is the same height as the driver side. So I don't really know what year frame mount is on the passenger side, is there any way to tell the difference between the 68 and 67 mount?

I would say yes to the fact that it was the accident, but when I got the car back from the body shop the 289 that was in the car sat fine. The motor sat at the proper height and was level, everything was cool until I changed the motor mounts. When you mention the v6 mounts I am assuming you mean the I6 mount? Also are you talking about using the I6 frame mount or motor mount? I don't mind improvising or being creative, that is what I'am doing with all the mods I am putting on my car. I'd like to get the passanger side a 1/2" lower, but I would settle for a 1/4".

The mounts off of a six will not work. My windsor sat a little bit crooked as well. I tried different mounts but still the same. I finally ended up adding washers between the mount and the block until it sat level. The will work for you also, but i am wanting to know how to level it out without them also.
 
Gunmetal, they aren't poly mounts so I can't shave them down unfortantly, wish I could.

68coupe1 - What side sat higher, the passanger side? I was thinking about using washer on the driver side mount to lever the motor out, but that will not help with the passanger side trany interance.

Anybody know where I can source some mounts that would lower the engine down a bit?

A motor mount "set" from a 65' or earlier Mustang would lower the motor if you used it on the passenger side ALTHOUGH it would probably be too much since that mount would cause 3/4-1" drop.

Dennis - Can I use the 65 type on both side of my 68, or should I just use it on one side? Also do you know if you can just use it on one side? I think I might go this route I have at least an inch of clearance between the crossmember and oil pan.

Not an expert on the conversion. I do know that 65-66 can use the more common 67-70 motor mount sets without mods. From that, I deduced that your 68 could use the early 65 3 piece mounts. They should work on both sides and the will lower the motor in your car. I used them in my 65 with a 393w in order to gain hood clearance for my Vic Jr intake.

If you needed to lower one side, you could use a 65 type mount on that side and use spacers in order to raise the motor up to where it was more to your liking.
 
How about taking the passenger side to a welding shop and have them weld up the holes that mount to the frame and redrill them to work? I know that the paddock lists tall and short mounts.
 
OK, here's the deal. Ford made two different sets of V8 FRAME MOUNTS for the 67-70 Mustang. One set was used in ALL V8 1967 Mustangs (regardless of displacement) and the other was used in 1968-70 small block cars EXCEPT the convertibles. 1968-70 big block (FE) cars and convertibles used the 1967 frame mounts.

Thus the 1967 small block cars used a unique MOTOR MOUNT that is impossible to find nowadays. The one listed in most car parts catalog does not work.

You might have the wrong frame mount/motor mount combo. There are some very goods threads on the VMF about this issue which include pictures of the two different frame mounts.

If you get the small block frame mounts and use the motor mounts listed in the catalogs for 68 Mustangs with a 289 you should be OK.
