Motor mounts

changing 6 banger out of 65 stang to 302, been looking at these motor mounts in some catalogs. Is it just 3 pieces? Motor mount, frame mount, and rubber insolator thing?

Looks like gonna cost me over $200 bucks, any cheaper way to do the same job?
 
A salvage yard will save you a bunch of money. The frame part of the mount hardly ever has any wear or damage so they can be purchased used. For motor mounts, compare the catalogues with places like Advance auto, Autozone, RockAuto.com and O'Reillys.
 
My freaking wheels aint gonna work

17 by 9.5 inch American Racing wheels, pretty, but too big for this car. They rub pretty much everything.

65 Stang what backspacing is correct and how wide a wheel can I run, I`m guessing no more then 8 wide, not sure though.
 
I don't know if this thread is a about motor mounts or wheels, but yes, sometime in 66, they changed the mounts. There are mounts made for 65-68 and I would guess they are the later style although there were several versions from Ford in those years.
 
Yes, 66 mounts are higher. Take care if you get headers. Some will not fit with the early mounts. It may take a call to the manufacturer to find this out, but you should check.

Based on the use you have described earlier, I would go with a 7" rim on front with 4" backspacing. You can use an 8" on the back with 4.5" BS. I swapped my 225/50-16s up front for 205s and never looked back. It drives better with the narrower tire and I don't miss any traction on the twisties, even when driven spiritedly. I'm sure that there is a difference ... I'm just saying that it isn't much, and on the street you are unlikely to notice anything, at all. A 225/50-16 on the rear is a good size - looks good and gives decent traction. We don't drive these cars enough to NOT have the tires go hard before they are worn out (usually), so get a sticky tire (poor wear rating) like the Kuhmo ECSTA MX tires, or similar 200-220 rated tire (wear rating). Those Kuhmos really stick.

Another thing: if you keep the tire on the rear at the size recommended, you are unlikely to break anything in your drivetrain. The tires will break loose before anything else breaks. It's a nice safety precaution. Besides, it's easier to chirp in 1-2 shifts with your C4.
 
Mine aint driven too much either

Spend too much time working to get much of anything done. I love the stance my car has now, it has P215/50/R17`s on it, and I`d like it to look pretty much the same. But without the tire rubbing its doing now, I cant even get 4 people in the car or the back tires rub the fenderwells when I hit a bump.

But I`ve got 4 1/4 inch backspacing, and there aint much room between the leaf spring and the tire now, 4 1/2 would be real close.

I like the sticky tire idea though, never thought of that.

the 66 mounts are DEFINITELY taller than the 65's... my 65 l6 to V8 conversion with the 66 mounts raised the engine (351w) to a point that, with a wiend stealth intake, the aircleaner (cobra oval, 1 1/5 " tall) hit the underside of the hood... hello fiberglass shelby hood!
