Motor Shaking Badly

Hey guys i havent been on in a while i hope everyone's doing great..Ive got some issue's with the stang...Anybody know why my motor shakes so bad? It shakes so bad that my shifter and my whole car rattles and its very uncomfortable to drive..I look at my motor and it just shakes all over the place. Not just at idle though..I wont even go full throttle because it rattles so bad i feel like somethings going to break..Its very annoying. I have jacked my car up and looked at my Harmonic balancer several times but i cant see any rubber coming out anywhere.

Kris, does it do it while you are stationary (not moving, but revving the motor in neutral) or only while actually driving down the road.

Knowing that helps isolate the rotating drivetrain from the motor.

It does it while im in neutral and while im driving.

Agreed. If it does it stationary, then the balancer is worth checking again. You can run a cylinder balance test to rule out a serious misfire.

If you bring up the rpm's easy from idle .............

and still get the vibes ...........

that ought to rule out the mm's!

Have you checked your balancer while the car is running? If it's bad you should be able to see it shaking pretty badly. I looked at mine while the car wasnt running, and I couldnt find any rubber sticking out of it, pulled it off and then saw 1/2 of the rubber was missing.

Hey guys..Well i took it to my buddys shop..Mikes Performance Automotive in Lancaster, CA..No rubber showing..The harmonic balancer has slipped within itself and the 0 degree mark is not lined up with the hole anymore

Absolutely Kris. I really would try not to drive it at all till the balancer is fixed. Borrow money if you have to, but get it replaced very very soon.

Well..It has been shaking like that for a good three to four months..So is the crankshaft "un-balanced" being that it is making the whole car shake? Am I causing damage to my engine driving it under these conditions? What all is involved in the replacement of a harmonic balancer? What will I need to buy?

DON'T DRIVE IT....
It's not a hard job, you need a balancer, can borrow/rent the removal tool, and a big 15/16's socket and a breaker bar to get the bolt out. Hopefully it's a stick.
A search on balancer will find LOTS of threads....

you possibly could have done some damage to your main & rod bearings.

You just need to fix it ...... right away!

It is not so much that the crankshaft is unbalanced - the H. damper quells torsional vibration (the fact that it is wrongly referred to as a 'balancer' can confuse its purpose).

When the piston explodes downward, it applies a torsional force against the crank, which can cause deflection and vibration or harmonics. The HD can help quell those vibes.

Grady, did you ever wrench on any old Triumphs? At higher RPM's the cam deflection was so bad that the ignition timing was all over the place. Thinking about this stuff reminded me of that for some reason.
