Just installed my MSD PBSD, the stock type points distro died one day while i was driving. the new distro was a PAIN to put in. the trick is to make sure the oilpump drive shaft seats properly, then drop in the distro pointing as close to where the other one was. the new distro wont seat so while its partially in slowly turn the motor over by hand (15/16th's socket on a 1/2" drive) until the distro drops in ober the oil pump drive shaft.

after setting the intial timing it was good to go, however i can't drive it until the rain stopps to see if i need to change the timing curve.

Is it possible to set a revlimiter on a carbed 5.0? On my 65 with stock type ignition (distributer, coil, ect, no msd box) you could rev it as high as you dared. However, on my 5.0 createi would like to be able to set a rev limiter up on it. Possible?

right now i'm running thru a MSD Digital 6, its great bc it does not use the chips to set the limiter. it uses dials. the D6 also has a 2 stage rev limiter turning your car into a push button dragger, let up off a momentary button and release the low limiter.

bullit - absolutely possible to limit any engine with an MSD box or equivalent.

Those drop in distributors dont need a box and I thought they are pretty much a no brainer to install. I WILL NEVER REPLACE POINTS OR DEAL WITH CRAPPY MALE PLUG WIRES AGAIN!!!!! I hated both those things

If you go to an aftermarket box, what else do you need? What kind of distributer?

mfp you're right, however, there are 2 types of probillet distro's: the ready-to-run (doesn't need an ign box), and the street (needs a 6, 7, or 10 series).

the latter is about $30 cheaper, and both do the same exact thing. i got mine with the vacum adv. bc this is more a street car than a race car and has an auto trans.

Bullit, if you put an aftermarket box on a points distro you'll probably end up like i did, buying a new distro bc the points failed from the increased current. your 01 bullit will handle the increased current just fine. MSD makes a box just for distributor-less ignitions (i think all 4.6's have coil packs) but not sure. your current ignition will definately handle a piggy back box.

someone correct me if i'm wrong but don't all new computer controlled cars have a built in rev-limiter to keep young stalions from blowing thier stacks?

I think Bullit is building a 5.0 for his 65 mustang, that's what he wants the ignition for.

Yea im sorry for not being specific. Im looking at ignitions for for the 65 that im doing a 5.0 swap into. So if i run the MSD Distrubuter with the MSD 6 series plus, it should be a pretty solid set up? I could then control rev limits, curves, ect.?

And yes the newer mustangs do have rev limiters. Mines set at 6200. far difference from the old 289's 4800..

jst6....i'm literally in the middle of doing the same exact thing you just completed. I just installed my MSD- digital 6 and need to get a new steel gear put on my Pro-billet before i pop that in....when i took out my accel distributor it slid out like butter. everything looked good inside there. You mentioned that the distributor wouldn't seat fully until you slowly cranked over the motor? Did it just start sliding onto the cam gears then just stop because the oil pump was off to one side? also did you set your motor configuration as a standard 8cyl. or the setting with 20 degrees retard at startup? either way it's good to hear your stuff worked the first time around...i got a faulty D6 strait out of the box =/. later.

jon, right now its just a straight setup. but when i rebuild the motor with more comp. i will use the start retard.

i had to slowly turn the motor bc the hex on the orig. distro was in a diff position than the MSD. just took a small 1/2" drive ext and a 15/16's socket to turn it. i imagine if you have high comp that would be tough with all the plugs in

bullit, yup you get that stuff and a set of MSD 8.5mm wires and you're in ignition heaven... try the denso iridium plugs. most of the PSCA racers swear by them. as for the box i highly recomend the digital 6 plus, it does cost more but you can set the max rev limiter with a DIAL not a chip and you get a second rev limiter that sets with a DIAL. not to mention start retard, and single stage retard for a nitrous plate.
