Mustang II conversion and long tube headers?

I have a 65 that I converted to a Mustang II style front suspention. I had a set of Hooker SuperComps that I planned on using for my car before the suspention change. Well, they no longer fit due to the steering linkage and the rear sump oil pan. :bang: Has anyone completed a MII kit and found long tube headers that will fit?

I'm also converting a 65 front end. I was thinking of going with a fat man fab since the hub would be at the same level as a stock hub. What suspension did you use and I am also intrested on what headers to use since mine was a 6/200 and I putting in a 289 hp.

'66 'vert

We've just finished the Rod & Custom Motorsports conversion on my 66 'vert, and have swapped in a nicely rebuilt 5.0 efi + 5 speed. My old Hedman headers wouldn't clear a spark plug (World Products Windsor heads...must have slightly different locations) but otherwise the headers would have fit just fine.

Fatman sure doesn't offer much for all the money...seems that you have to supply too many parts. I am extremely pleased with the quality of fabrication from R&C. When you call, you will get Willie on the phone...he's the guy that started doing this many years ago with his own car, and then started selling kits. I had called Heidt's...got some idiot "parts counter" type kid on the phone that knew nothing.

As a side note: the "donor car" '89 that I used had a newly rebuilt motor, new upgraded T-5, better clutch, nice dual exhaust, etc. Using the factory short tube headers, the exhaust bolted up and fit perfectly. Seems that so many dimensions just carry over.

Still got a lot of work to do on this car to be ready for Nashville in April. I am really curious to see what the cornering limits are on this car; I will eventually build a 408 stroker for my '65 2+2 and don't know what to do with the front suspension. So...I'm interested in anyone who has been out driving in the "twisties" with a MII conversion to hear driving impressions.

Custom is about all you can do for this swap as nothing off the shelf will fit. I tried four different header combos and none of them fit. Finally had to buck up and have a custom set made ($$$)..

You guys can buy my custom made headers for the swap. :D I'm going turbo instead of supercharged. They cost me 1500. They are 1 7/8th throughout and fully coated in and out. They are meant to be used with a tremec trans though and cable clutch.

I used mostly the R&C kit. I purchased alot of parts cheaper from differant vendors however. I didn't like the "post" engine mounts they offered and have almost completed making my own that connect to the frame at an angle.

The R&C kit is top notch. The TIG welds and over all construction are the highest quality I have ever seen in the many years I've been building cars. I highly recomend their kit.

I know that Mac equal length shorties fit like a glove. I'd like to go with long tube headers though. My situation is further complicated by having a T-sump oil pan.

The Hooker SuperComps for the 65-66 Mustangs will not fit BTW

The Fatman kit will have totaly different fitment issues then the MII kits. The steering linkage is located in a totaly different spot. I would guess that it would be easier to find headers for the 65-66 years that would fit.

The MII kits will fare better with headers meant for Fox bodied vehicles.

I guess you guys run into some of the same problems we do with headers in the II's(where the front ends belong ;) )but at least you have a little more room. The fox shorties in our cars won't work- they exit right on top of the steering shaft. We end up with Headmans(the cheap headers still made for us) with the Number one pipe routed under our front xmember, great design by Headman so we can crush it by hitting bumbs or potholes, or The rare set of Hookers when they are available or seen on ebay- either way we pay out the butt for them. The other option for us is custom fit headers as well.
