I'm looking into putting the Mustang II IFS into my car, and was curious about a few things that I havn't been able to readily find online. Such as, how far apart are the frame rails on a Mustang II. Or, how long is the IFS subframe not including the suspension components?
Does anybody know anything about potentially mounting a sealed bearing/hub onto a Mustang II spindle? Or what spindle options are available?

I'm specificially interested in the heavier duty 74-78 pieces.

Check Heidt's or Fatman Fabrications for "mustang II" rod suspension stuff. The OE parts are ugly, and the crossmember is weak when removed from the rest of the unitized shell.

Plus, most II guys don't take kindly to hacking the front ends out of our cars. They think that all the cars can/should be "saved"

Well I would be attatching it to the unibody of my 86. And I can make a tubular crossmember if I have something to reference if it's too horribly hideous or weak.

Maybe I'll hack up a Pinto to appease the masses

I'm no expert on the fox cars but don't they also have R&P steering? Are you just trying to ditch the struts? All the front end parts are the same on the II's with the exception of the springs and sway bar.

Yes they do have R&P steering. I'm trying to ditch the strut-style suspension aswell as the struts and their accompaning strut-towers.
From what I understand the 74 and later pieces are a bit stronger than the earlier years. This could just be a myth though, I've only ever seen two Mustang II's in my life, one was outside of a 7-11 and the other was on Parris Island. I didn't get a good look at either.

Anybody get a chance to poke around with a tape measure yet?

What measurement are you looking for, exactly? I need to head to dads 1st thing in the morning (where alot of my II crap still is... ) I have two complete front suspension assemblies that were cut off a couple of parts cars that I can EASILY get measurments from. Have to go over there anyways to get pics of a couple of II doors for another fella.

Shame I went to bed just before your reply!

What I would like to know is, where the front suspension subframe is connected to the frame rails. How far apart from eachother are those frame rails. Measuring from the inside of one to the inside of the other is fine.

If the frame rails were completely removed from the subframe or you cannot tell where they would have been exactly on the mounting points. A measurement from the center to center of the subframe to frame rail mounting surface, and a measurement of how wide that subframe mounting surface is will do also.

What I'm trying to figure out is, will the subframe be able to mount to a foxbody unibody without being lengthened or shortened.

Also if you have a complete front suspension you can sell send me a pm and maybe we can work out a deal

Yeahhhh you're not gonna want to send one of these prizes out to VA. A Weee bit to heavy and kinda large.

Anyhow, the measurement (as if the frame rails were removed from the subframe) Is approx 27 3/4"

The wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face distance (suspension extended down) measures approx 56" (give or take an inch plus any gains with suspension at ride level also)

From the outside of the framerail to the wheel mounting face is approx 14 1/4, again with the suspension extended downward.

The 1st measurement is pretty accurate, the other two were eyeballed to the best I could to in the dark and in the rain.

Here's a pic of what I was measuring from. If you need any more measurements, you can indaicate it on the pic if need be.
