I'm trying to think of a decent combo for my 68. How would this combo work?..........

Cam= Comp XE 274
Heads= Edelbrock Performer Rpm
Manifold= Pro. Products Dual Plane
Comp ratio= 9.5 - 10.1
Carb= 650 vac secondary?
Crank=302
Block= 1968 289

I currently have a C4 with 2500 stall (Continental 10'') with 3.50
gears. How does it sound or what would you change?

Thanks

Looks good, you'd probably be jsut as happy running a 600cfm vac secondary carb. Otherwise it looks like an engine that would be fun in the street. What gears and trany are you looking at?

I'm not targeting any specific numbers. I just want to have a combo with well working matching parts that i can really enjoy driving. If i can manage to get 350 FWHP i would be happy.

I have a C4 with a 2500 stall, and a 9'' rear with 3.50 gears.

It looks like you have a nice selection of parts.

It looks VERY similar to my 347 build in my '66 Coupe.
I have the same XE274 cam,
AFR 185 heads,
Used to use the same Pro Products manifold; (picked up 2.5mph at track with a Vic. Jr.) You may not notice as much of a difference on a 302.
10:1 Compression
650 Vacuum Secondary
C4 with 3000 stall (Edge Converter)
8" rear with 3.55 gears

My car has run in the 11.8's at the strip on 235 drag radials. No doubt the extra torque of the 347 over the 302 helps get the car out of the hole quickly running the street friendly 3.55 gears. For the track I would think your car would want more gear to ET better (as does mine) but it should be a very fun and quick street car.

I have the Comp 268 on my 289 with heavily ported stock heads. It runs pretty hard and is very livable around town. That being said, I bet that the 274 would really bring the power with some aftermarket heads. Judging by Vinyl66 getting into the 11s, sounds like a very nice combo.

If you haven't bought the heads yet, I would suggest trick flow, canfield, or RHS over the edelbrocks. They are priced similarly and will make more power. I'd shoot for a little over 10:1 on the compression also.

68 engine compartment I would change your recipe from soup (289) to beef stew (351W)....:D

OK just kidding....

My ideal 289 would rev really high and that XE274 drops off after 6200. I had the 274 in my 347 and went to the XE282. The 274 made plenty of HP and TQ with more cubes, not sure how it would be in a 289 but I would say since it's made for the 289 / 302 it would be fine and a better choice than the 268.

I would also consider some CNC AFR165's or Trick Flow heads.

Go with a mechanical secondary carb and a Vic Jr intake (that is strictly my preference for making more power, others may disagree)

Also with good aluminum heads you can get away with 10 or even 11 to 1 on good pump gas. Those extra points of compression can mean 20 or more HP per point.

Nice ride Vinyl66! Does your cam have a really rough idle? I'm stuck between the 268 and the 274.

Thanks!! It definitely has a mean lopey idle but not what I would call rough. It has a great sound compared to the stock cam. MUCH more agressive sounding. If not a bit too loud with Flowmaster 2 Chambers.:nice:
