My car is hesitating HORRIBLY...started today

So I'm driving and all of a sudden it was like the car was getting no gas whatsoever.

I was with two friends and we barely made it home, the car was accelerating slower than it would if it was powered with a 4 cylinder.

It's now idling VERY rough, and sounds as if it's going to die.

Randomly the problem will go away as I'm accelerating and the car feels like it's getting full power all of a sudden.

I replaced the fuel filter today, didn't fix the problem.

What's going on?

Milenko - sounds like the fuel pump is shot, or close to it.

Could it by any chance be the spark plugs/wires?

Neither have been changed since I've owned the car, which is about a year old...and the spark plug wires say "1996" on them, don't know if that means year of the car or the original wires.

Sounds like a bad fuel pump to me too.

with the age of that car I would replace coils , plugs , wires , and fuel pump just to be safe .....never know when something will leave you on the side of the road , I am one person that doesnt take chances , I have been left on the side of the road by a dam CHEVY , not cool ........do yourself a favor , replace all that stuff .......

It could also be your fuel filter. Especially if it runs worse with more throttle and better when you ease off.

That was the first thing I replaced, didn't help.

Spark plugs and wires didn't help either. Now it's either the coil packs or the fuel pump.

Just took it for a ride...seemed okay at first, then the problem came back, then it somewhat went away.

What would cause it to come and go? I don't want to keep dropping hundreds of dollars on parts that are still running fine.

See if you can rent a fuel pressure guage at your local autoparts, the kind that attaches to your schrader valve. Check your fuel pressure. I am not exactly sure what is should be at, I think around 38-41 psi. If not it could be your fuel pressure regulator that is causing all the problems. I will try to find the exact fuel pressure for you model and get back with you.

Didn't want to replace it unless it was absolutely necessary, but looks like it is.

Forgot to add something -

- A week and a half ago I got an O/R X pipe installed, and HAVE NOT installed Mils.

I have no CEL, but would this cause the problem? The O2s are unplugged.

My dad just told me something interesting.

When I got my X pipe installed, they didn't connect the front O2 sensors. The pipe was installed over a week ago, but the problems with the car happened within the past 2 days. Could this be the reason? No cel.

odd....should have a CEL if the front o2's werent hooked up. but that could be a problem.

clean the maf, check the torque on the spark plugs (could've loosened a few), and check fuel pressure as stated above. are u hearing any hissing noises or leaks?

check your cylinder torque too! but do it when cool! my car ran exactly as described when a few of mine were loose. 7-14 ft-lb's.

Checking the MAF now.

Only hissing noises I've been hearing since I bought the car, so no new ones.

I'm going to go look at the MAF and test it. I'll be back.

nah, if it was timing, then he would constantly have the problem. he said it goes away and comes back. also, its rare that a stock engine would jump timing. those chains are held down pretty damn good.
