My engine has gone retarded

OK I have a 94 V6.
I have been told the main bearing is broke or something like that.
The head gasket needs to be replaced ( the car blows white smoke like 1 time every 2 weeks )

Ok here is the problem.

The car overheats when I drive it after awhile.
The engine oil has a little tiny puncture in the side that smokes after it overheats.
The car WILL NOT overheat is it leave it in Neutral and keep revving it.
The car overheats when I put it in park and rev it.
Also the tempature meter stays goes to normal only between 1800-2500 rpms's
If its not between the rpms when I first drive the car after I let it sit for a day its ok for about 2 miles then it just overheats again.

The engine also makes a loud pinging noise after I drive for alittle while. Also it does this LOUDER after It starts to overheat even if im just sitting.

Basicly anything over 1500 rpm when the car is not overheating I can drive it fine with no noise or anything.

Once it starts overheating you just about gotta keep it at 1000rpm.

Anyway I knows its alot and confusing but can I just swap engines and be done with it? The local junkyard has 2 v6's still in car running fine for $500 each. I can get them to lower it some. Is that a good deal? Or should I just take it out and just do the big v8 swap. I can get a 90 GT engine for $300.(From my friends car/ now a racer at englishtown , nj)

The question I really want to know is..

Why does the engine only overheat when Im moving or in park? Not in neutral and I rev it forever?
 
Oppps sorry The engine tempature stays normal.. its the engine oil tempature that does low to high and so on..

Also If the car goes under about 700rpms in drive/1st/2nd/park the engine will turn off.

In nuetral it just sits normal no problems and will never overheat even if I let it run for 1 hr with the emergency brake on so the car wont move.
 
Everything on the car is fine and in good condition. I dont want to lay it to rest.

Which is recommended. Rebuild this engine.
Buy a used one from junkyard that I can hear run.

Everything on the car works fine and in good condition. The previous owner did not take care of the car though. It was 104k miles.

Replacing the engine is the only thing I can think of.
It will be the cheapest and fastest. Even though I can do without driving the car for along time.

Money is a issue though :) Under $800 is what I can spend to do this.

Nice car. 800$ to replace the engine, thats a little tight. I'm going to have to think about that one.
 
Like I said I already visited a junkyard that has 2 v6's still in car and they both run fine.

They want $500 for that. I can probaly get them to lower it some though.

Just swap them out. Only thing wrong with the car is the engine. Nothing else.

I can most likely put the engine back in myself. Just getting it out I have no clue on where to start. If not I can have a local friend take it out or put it back in for $200 even.

Should I just let the car sit and use the money to buy all the parts besides the engine for the v8 swap and start putting them in now? Then as I get more money get the engine and do the transmission swap to 5spd?

500$ for a used V6 engine, what years are they and how many miles are on them? A V8 and Tranny swap would be a little much but if you want to do that, then I would say go for doing the swap. It'll be a lot of money but it'll probably be worth it to you.
 
94 and 95. One has 102k the other has 96k. Both are automatic.
The one with 102k is alot cleaner though. Both were in rear/side accidents.
Both start up and run fine.

Can I use the v6 transmission that I have with the v8 ? If I can then I guess I can do that. Manual is not really important to me.
 
Ok I have about 1000 to spend now. Should I buy the used engine and have it installed by a local shop for $950 I have to buy the engine though. Everything That does not work on the new engine will be put on the new used one.

Or should I buy the engine. Pay my friend $200 to take the engine out. Then put the new one in myself and hopefully hook everything up. Then pray it works fine lol ? I want to spend aslittle as possible..

Also should I just get the current engine fixed?
 
ok it overheats because V6 mustangs have crappy head gaskets, compliments of Ford. The trannies in the V6 Mustangs are the same as the V8 as far as manual goes, auto ur on ur own finding out, but im pretty sure its the same. So if u want ur overheating problem fixed change the headgaskets, that will stop the white smoke and overheating.
 
OK that will stop the overheating. But what about the loud metal pinging noise coming from the heads? Is that just the Rockers arms needing to be adjusted?

The heads on this car look kinda new so maybe they put them on wrong?

Also can you give me a estimate of how much it would cost to replace a head gasket?

With the Loud metal pinging noise coming from the heads. Its gets louder as RPMS are raised and sometimes it is gone around 2500 rpms but there at every rpm around it. Both higher and lower....

Why doesnt the car overheat when I have it in Neutral though? Also could there be possible other damage to the engine because of the pinging?
 
First off, let's make sure you're reading the right guages. The guage in the upper left corner is the engine temperature. The guage in the lower right is the oil pressure, not temperature. Oil pressure should be relatively stable, though will rise slightly when the engine's really warm. Which is the guage you're reading?

The pinging is due to the engine running lean. Basically, the engine's so hot the fuel/air mixture is igniting befire it's supposed to. This is not a good thing, don't run the car when it's pinging. Too much pinging can easily blow a hole in a piston.

Unlikely. The heads are identical, so you can swap them from side to side. However, if the head gasket was replaced already, and the heads weren't properly milled to make them flat, the head gasket can blow again.

When my head gasket went on my '94, I paid about $1400 for the replacement. This is a labor-intensive job, so over half of that was labor costs. They also installed an upgraded gasket kit from Ford - it includes a stronger head gasket.

There's less resistance on the engine when it's in neutral, so it's likely not getting too hot. It's hard to say what's going on there.

I've had to deal with overheating on my '94 several times. You could also be having trouble with your sensors on the car, where they're not working right so the computer in the car isn't doing what it's supposed to.

Please reply to these questions, and we'll go from there.
 
The pinging noise is metal against metal. That is what it sounds like.
It pings when I start it up but goes away until it starts to overheat then its there at all rpms's. Even before It starts to overheat I cannot go over about 2000rpm without it pinging.

There is no more white smoke. I dont know why. But the white smoke stopped about 3 days ago.

There are no check engine lights or anything else coming on until the Overheating gets serious. Then the check engine light comes on. Other than that its fine.

The Oil pressure gauge is the one that goes crazy unless its in neutral.
 
Ah, then it's not a coolant issue. Sounds like your oil pump is either blocked or going out. Does the engine temperature go up at all, when the engine "overheats"? If not, the engine's not overheating. Though, if you're starving the engine of oil the engine WILL overheat due to the friction. That might be the cause of your pinging noise.

Personally, I think your engine's gonna need a lot of work to get it running. I would just grab one of the junkyard engines (the lower mileage one is likely better), and drop it in. Less expensive IMO.
 
Engine Tempature stays the say. its the Oil pressure gauge.. The lower right one that goes crazy. The engine oil tube also has a small puncture in it towards the top. The car engine all Is at Full though even when it overheats and smoke comes from that tube when overheated. So its the oil pump most likely huh?
 
Now, one question I have is, if the engine temperature is staying the same why do you say the engine is overheating?

You'll have to excuse me, I'm having a busy day at work so I'm not as focused as I should be. Do you have an OBD-II code reader? You can hook one up and read all of the computer's inputs. You can see what the computer says the coolant temperature is, and you should be able to read the oil pressure. I don't remember if my code reader has that option, however.

You should use the code reader and verify if the guage is actually reading the correct values. Also check for any engine codes, sometimes the computer stores a code but doesn't light the check engine light.
 
I say the engine overheats because it gets steaming hot. and starts smoking. I recently notice the driver side part of the engine gets the hottest and that is where the noise comes from. Also that is the only part the smoke comes from. It comes Like from under the headers and the inside engine oil tube(if u take cap off).
