I was given an opportunity to buy this car, at an price I couldn't refuse, The person I bought from is a friend, and I had helped him with most the hands on work that was done to it. My ?'s are when he bought the car it did not have O2's so when we changed the stock intake to the Holley, we bought some O2's and hooked them up only to see the car ran way Worse with them in, so he took them back out, also he didn't put a thermostat back in when we did the intake swap. I am pretty sure that the computer is just running in "LIMP" mode right now, I dont have any reason to believe that there was any tuning done to the computer, I think that it is running around 14* timing wise. When I got the car home, I found some bad Vac plugs, so I replaced them and the idle seemed to smooth out a little bit.

Should I try to put the O2's back in, and also put a 180 T-stat in while I am soing it, because right now when I get out of the car all I smell is raw gas, and I cant stand it.

Also I want to change the spark plugs in it right now I believe they are autolite 24 or 25, I think this may be one of the resons it stumbles at 4K, any recommendations on plugs would be nice as well.

Motor is a Balanced Blueprinted 306, P&P E7's, Holley Sytemax, Stock fuel Rail with stock Injectors, 70mm Throttlebody, BBK LT's, with BBK X-pipe and V-Force mufflers dumped before axle, Tauras E-Fan, MSD 6AL.

**The car has not been converted to Mass Yet.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated

lol all those mods and no Mass Air. That is your problem. That things need to be converted for real. You need to run o2s but with no t-sta the car is going to run rich anyways because it is in open loop. Get that t-stat in there and hook the o2s back up. The o2s arent your problem if you hook them and the car runs like ****. I would say the car isnt getting enough air. Get that MAF sensor on there and see if that helps

Thank you for the prompt reply, I am aware that the car needs to be converted asap, the main reason he didnt do it was because the car simply works right now, however I just do not like smelling like a gas can. The car runs awesome, except for the occasional stumble that I get at 4K, but I want it to be better, I guess thats what makes it an addiction, lol. I will deff be putting a T-stat in this weekend, and if I can afford it some new O2's also.

just as an aside since it seems like you know what to do next.

I would look at changing the intake. IMO the systemax is more suited for 331-347 for a street type, under 6200rpm motor.

A ported gt40/cobra would probably pick that thing up everywhere in the RPM range. Even a tmoss ported stocker . . .

bull****.

he said nothing about an aftermarket cam. If he's still running the HO mustang cam, speed density is all he needs for that setup. however, IF you're running with an aftermarket cam, then I agree, THERE is your problem, start there.
do you have the stock computer or a tune??? I'd be sure it's the stock speed density computer without a tune.

other than that, you need to put the o2's back in, pull trouble codes, and start from there.

you need a mass air man

again, he said NOTHING about running an aftermarket cam. If so, he does NOT need mass air!!!!

all these internet warriors who have no real life experience, lol.

I currently run gt40p heads, a ported explorer (gt40 intake)...1.7 roller rockers, STOCK HO MUSTANG CAM, tfs valve springs, full exhaust, and all the other bolt ons. my mods are much more extensive than his....I absolutely purr with speed density.

:nice: Well said!

None of his modifications listed effect the engine vacuum.

Autolite 24's or 25's are fine.

Try disconnecting the battery over night then the next day before starting the car up, put the o2's back in and hopefully the car will relearn the idle.

he needs an aftermarket cam, mass air, and dual penis pumps

I do not know what the cam is, however I do not have idle issues, it idles in the 900 range, I believe it is aftermarket, but I dont know, had someone tell us once at the track that it was idling too smooth to not be stock but it was idling at 1500 that day. Now you can hear the cam but only slightly. If it is aftermarket I would like to think that it is Speed density safe. THank you for all of the replies, I have read that as long as the cam is "safe" with the duration I should be fine with speed density, I would like to convert it to mass so I can add more stuff later, but right now I just do not want to sink that much money into it, I just bought it and have plenty of time to add to it. The car runs very well, it just runs extremley rich.

Again thank you,

try a few things.

-lower the rpms to where they're supposed to be at, 750-800 tops. See what happens then. If it becomes lopey, you've def got a cam, and I would for sure upgrade to mass air.

also, a speed density system will richen with vacuum leaks. the way that speed density works, is more throttle less vacuum right?? Well, when the map sensor on the firewall sees less vaccum (big cam or vacuum leak)...it naturally thinks you've got your foot planted in the gas, and throws extra gas into the motor.

pull a vacuum test. be sure you've got a clean strong 17+ pounds of vacuum at idle. If it's any less, that's why you're running so rich...(of course the o2's too could do this, but you may as well eliminate vacuum related issues)

speed density is extremely finicky with vacuum, so I'd start with a vacuum reading, and post back what you find.

thank you , I have the day off tomorrow so I will do a vac test, and double check that everything is tight, as far as the idle I can not get it any lower, without it stalling, when we did the intake swap, my buddy done it without me the first time, and forgot to reattach the vac line to the map sensor, the car sounded like it was a full on race cam, exrtemely lopey, but it idled great it didnt die, unfortunately it did nothing but smoke like hell, then I saw that he didnt have the vac line on and as soon as I put it on the idle smoothed right out, and it stopped smoking, but it went form 800ish rpm to 1000, so I dont know, again this is my first mustang, I have been reading ALOT on here, and trying to figure some stuff out, I had Camaros before, and took the money I was going to put into my 89 firebird to buy this, I made the right choice, just need to smooth out the minoir things.

My cousin added a cobra intake, ported stock heads, jba headers, cold air intake k&n filter, on a 87.Car ran like s+!+. He converted to mass air ran better. I would recomend a mass air maybe will help., but who knows it migt be the o2 sensors giving you that problem. You have stock pipes?MY car smell like that but have no smog pump and cats running to rich also.

ok so I ran a vac check and got a rock solid 16.5, while I was at it I checked the tps sensor, it was at .56, so I changed it to .99, and then I check my rpm usin my DVM, which has an rpm setting, and I got 750-780 at idle, while my tach was reading around 900. At idle it does have a lope to it, its kinda hard to hear with the mufflers dumping at the axle but there is a lope to it, I also installed a MR Gasket 160 thermostat, and reset the computer and installed the new O2's, it seems to be idling fine, I havent taken it out yet, but the gas smell is not on the exhaust anymore. I will repost once I take it out.

thanks for all the helps guys,

-Josh-

The motor was built by an "old school" guy who died before the car made its way to my friend, noone really knows what he did to it other than its balanced and blueprinted, and was bored .030, I wish I knew what kind of pistons, and cam were installed, so I know what I have, unfortunately without taking the motor apart I do not know. It runs extremely well, thats all I know. But I agree with you who goes through all the trouble to build a really nice motor to not be able and use it to its potential, its just a waste to me. but thats just MO.

what size egr spacer?

No joke when I changed to an aftermarket tubular GT40 intake on my speed density 86 it reaked of raw fuel until I changed out the stock egr spacer for a bigger one...........not sure why but I was told to do it and it worked.........just my 2 cents

your vacuum does sound a little low.

I think you may have a very mild cam, if you're certain you have no leaks.

I would indeed swap to mass air, as 16 pounds could cause you to run a little rich.

I am pretty psitive that I have no leaks, I replaced all of the plugs, with new ones today, before I did the check, and just to make sure I was getting an accurate reading, i put one of the plugs on that was cracked, and it dropped, so I would like to say it is leak free, I also just got back from a drive, went to wendy's, and while I was in the drive thru I noticed the idle was WAYYYY different then before, I could feel them cam with the idle set properly, it has soild motor mounts, the whole car was shking to the idle, it was pretty nice, i did notice a reduced smell of raw fuel. when I was doing the T-stat, i noticed that there was a small amount of gas on the second injector on the pass side, maybe O-ring???. It felt a little smoother when I would get on it, didnt seem to stumble at all, but when I was in the 35 zone, it didnt respond as rapidly as it use to weird?, any way my temp gauge doesn't seem to want to move, is the sender the one on the front of the intake drivers side?

Thanks
