allright guys lets get some help here, tomorrow from 4-9 will be my first time racing at a drag strip, it is a 1/4 mile, what times will i be lookign at???

I have a 1970 coupe, 302 with a TORKER intake, edelbrock 650 carb, and long tube headers into 2 1/2 exhaust, now my tries are a little bald so i know this will effect my times, i was thinking mid 15's, are 14's evan possible??????

i think your first runs will likely be in the 16 sec bracket untill you get some time behind the wheel. your times should drop fairly quickly though. 14's are possible with tuning and good driving. some tips, shallow stage, and leave on the last yellow.

yep i did pull a 15.95!!!! but this should be a bracket car lol, all night i pulled 16.0's to 16.3's, i red-lit twice out of 17 runs, and for my first time i did damn good at the light with perfect bieng .000, i had alot of of good lights my best one was .047 (when i ran the 15.95)i had alot of fun which was the biggest thing, i also didnt have a fresh air cleaner or any tuning, so im thinking a MSD pro billit distributer with a 6AL box will wake it up quite a bit, and some 3:73 gears should get me in the low high 14's, will that distributer get rid of the old points, what is a good ignition setup???????

Thats a pretty good ET considering your mph. The gears, tires and locker will help you the most off the bat, rather than the ignition (unless yours is really really bad). I'd go that route first.

before doing any mods, get your 60' times down in the 1.80 range consistantly. that way you have a good base to work from. then make one mod at a time. first i would do the ignition mods so you can get the engine running consistantly. gears next, 3.73's or 3.89's are about right for your current combo. after that go for a good drag radial tire, the nitto 555's are a good one to use. remember consistancy is very important if you want to be successful at bracket racing.

How in the heck do you expect him to get the 60' times down that low without and mods? I've got @400rwhp and can do 1.80 60'. That's with 3.70 gears and @3500 stall on ET Streets. I know my car is not that fast but it's got alot more than his has. So for you to say no mods until he gets 1.80's is just imposible , IMO.

Gears will make the biggest improvement out the door. When I first ran my car it had 2.70 something gears and on the 500' track could only do 9.30's. Then I made the switch to 3.70 gear and drag radials and picked up a full second. This was on the stock 302 block with some cam that was in it whin I bought the thing and a failing c-4.

Now after a new 331 stroker, Eldelbrock RPM heads, RPM intake, 750 carb, headers, nitrous, comp c-4 and ET Streets it runs 6.70's w/1.80's 60' on motor and 6.00's w/1.70 60' with a hit of the good stuff. Keep in mind this is only a 500' track.

others have pretty good tips so won't really expand on them much.

if i were you though, i wouldn't spend the money for the pro-billet distributor, the standard billet with 6AL combination will serve you just fine.

traction will help you out quite a bit, but you're hurting a lot in the power dept (that 83 mph trap is fairly low even for that combo). might want to look into a good tune...

Well after about 5 grand in motor and tranny, ET Streets and a well preped track it's easy. This track is only 500', and 1/8 is 660'. I should be about 7.70's in a true 1/8.

The cam and valvetrain are going to be your limiting factor after you get a gear. I went through the same thing when I had a 302 in my '69. Started off with a 600 Holley DP, Edelbrock RPM intake, 2.79 gear and headers. Ran mid 15's at 88 MPH. Got a 3.89 gear and ran low 15's and floated the valves in my stock heads at anything over 5000 RPM's because the gear shifts came so much faster. Cleaned up the heads, new valves and springs, new cam (230/235, .512/.515 lift) and ran 14.3 at 98-99 MPH with traction problems.
Added GT-40 heads and started running 103-104 MPH in the quarter but had no traction at all.

If the valves and springs are good in your heads you may want to add a good cam and a gear. Definitely upgrade to electronic ignition. Your other parts are great and are just waiting for upgrades.
