my gas milage is horrible

I just bought my stang with 3.73 gears elderbrok performer rpm upper intake ported lower intake .bbk 70mm throttle body 24 pound injectors.a cold air indution system....and it seams that my gas mialage is about 8 MPG city and that scares me..i love my mustang but i really cant be spending 20 dollors on gas every 2 days..my car has very very strong smells can be scented from 20 yards away im not joking its a rich smell ...is there anything i can do to improve this gas milage i see the 95' stangs get 25 mpg HW can i get that as well???
...is there anything i can check to see if theres something wrong is there like a site i can read up anything lol...i really dont want to tell my girl friend she was right....help me out plz.........What is the gas milage i should be getting

something must be wrong leaking in jectors maybe i get 28mpg with my 91 vert gt since i swapped the aod for a t-5 i was getting 25 with the aod but i still have the stock 2.73 rear end

i got 24mpg the last time i drove mine on the highway. i havent driven it since the T-5 but id guess its good. (2.73's all the way)

I get about 10mpg in the city (when im not over heating, need bigger radiator) and about 15 or so on the highway. My girlfriend doesn't care
whats so ever, she drives my car almost more than i do. Gotta love a stang girl!

yea i only get about 10mpg city as well and i got cold air und, flowmasters, x-pipe, headers, and superchip. As far as i know isnt all that supposed to improve mileage? I also notice a gas smell quite often so i'm havin the same problem lol

Plus i run my car a tad but rich, just incase something does happen. I definatly dont want to run lean. I would rather run a little rich any day compared to a little lean IMO.

Welcome to the site!

Did it get decent milage before or has the milage always sucked? Is the MAF calibrated for the 24's?

I would pull codes to see if there is anything learned from that.

check your fuel pressure. why do you have those injectors? is your mass air calibrated for them?

Did you recently get the car? The rich smell could be from a few things:
Is your Smog equipment / EGR equipment there? How about the catalytic converters in the H-pipe / X-pipe?
Hissin / BCD already mentioned a incorrect calibration for the MAF w/ 24 lbs injectors
Fuel leak somewhere?

....follow srothfuss' lead....pull the diagnostic codes first.

These cars can have mileage that varies all over the place depending on how they're modded, the condition they're in, how they're driven and the traffic/road conditions you face. A stock vehicle w/a-c driven in heavy stop and go traffic (big city commuting - 5 miles in 45 minutes for example) might only get 10-13 mpg in those conditions. Add mods which weaken bottom end power and it can get worse. It ain't a multivalve 4 cylinder with variable valve timing in a car that weighs 2500 lbs.....after all.

My city conditions aren't bad at all - no rush hour commuting for me. Mine with mild H/C/I combo and 3.73 gears gets 18-20 around town, and 25-27 on the highway cruising around 65-68 mph.

No Mass Air

My 88 is speed density..since i bought the car it was like this...and the car came with those injectors...could it be the the car just suffers from to big????to big throttle body to big injectors and the car dont have the needed parts to utilize them .like the heads or cam and no igniton system??? I was told that from a friend of mine..and i just wanted other ppl's advise...the previous owner told me he took care of it and theres whay so many problems with it,gauges dont work and rust is a issue in the bottom and a incorectly installed shifter....filthy carpet i had to clean it so hard and some i couldent get out,but ill give her tlc but it first need to fix this problem plz help........ i wanna keep my baby...Drivng in nyc is never a smooth ride only like from 1-6 am is there like almost no traffic sometimes

Well - there's part of the problem. You need to get 19# injectors back in there. Perhaps someone has ghetto-rigged the fuel pressure to try and make larger injectors work -- but with altered fuel pressure or not, 24#'ers on a speed density system probably isn't gonna work very well - and that could make one pig rich. Get the 19# injectors in it, and fuel pressure at 38 psig measure at warm idle with the vacuum line temporarily off the regulator and plugged. Chances are that will make a big difference. Alternatively, convert it to mass air, and get an maf that's accurately calibrated for 24's.

As MY mentioned... An SD car shouldn't have 24 lb injectors. Switch to 19 and it should solve all of your issues.

I still recommend that you dump the codes based on JRICKHER's write up. It will tell you so much about the condition of the motor.

Also: An SD car is capable of being moddified without problem. You can add aftermarket Heads / Intake and exhaust. The one thing that you shouldn't change is the camsaft. The car will run fine and be very fast.

Some people get away with changing the cam (there are SD friendly cams out there) but I think it would be more trouble than it's worth.

T56 tanny is the way to get gas milage but u'll have to driave it alot for it to pay for its self!

Well Well

It just so happends i have stock injectors and throttle body and intake upper and lower..from my previous project i was gonna put a 5.0in a 87 rx7..it was my brothers project he had problems so i told him i would continue for him till he get back on his feet...but he wants to go carb(i think he's a fool)soo all the stock parts will be availble for me....i also have 3.55 gears brand new untouched it was for my 86 stang...will putting the 3.55 gears help????if i put the 19 pounders will i lose alot of power or would it be best to just install a mass air ????

You probably don't have enough mods to warrant the 24's yet even if you didn't have a SD car. If you had heads and a cam 24's would probably be needed. You are probably running way rich. Toss the 19's in. You shouldn't loose any power... possibly gain a little.

Id leave everything else on there but the 24# injectors, swap those out for the stock 19#'s. will 3:55's make your gas mileage slightly better? no, itll probably make it a little worse...i think.

The 3.55's will likely help around town mileage because the torque multiplication will allow you to move the car with less throttle opening; if you can reduce your highway speed by 5 mph, they probably won't hurt you there.

Mine has 3.73's -- and I'm inching my way up to 27-28 mpg on the highway 1/2 a mpg at a time....

Like I said in my first post.... On average (city + highway) I get 300 miles to a tank of gas with my mods.

Meaning, I have 3.73's just like MY. Gears don't hurt MPG, your right foot does.
