My H-pipe came apart!

Well, sort of. Slip fit connectors are no good. I hit something in the road while driving and it knocked the rear drivers side collar over the hpipe flange, which resulted in that sides hpipe disconnecting from the catback. My car went from sorta loud to WAAAY to loud.

So, what is the best way to remedy this? I had a friend hammer the collar back over the flange on the pipe, but it's loose and only a temporary fix. Should I have Midas or someone spot weld the collars to the hpipe, or have them weld the pipes to the catbacks all around the circumference of the pipe? I would like to have something done that can be taken back apart without having to cut the pipe off.

Any suggestions? How did you install your header/hpipe/catback setup?

Do NOT weld the catback to the H pipe. I could kill the PO for doing this to my car. I had to cut the catback up and get some flow tubes becasue I was changing the mid pipe.

More than likely, you WILL have to take that H back out someday. So save yourself some trouble. Spot weld .... that sounds alright, though.

Justin is right on. If that joint is mangled beyond being air tight, an exhaust shop can install matching/mating couplers to replace that fitting.

A good Ma and Pa exhaust shop (my favorite - I hate chains, though a lot of guys get cheap work done at chains) can do this for little money.

Good luck.

Midas will charge like $200 for 5 min worth of work. They quoted me $700-$1000 to install a catback that would involve 4 total welds and mounting. for a total of maybe 3 hours of work. At that point I told them not to bother, I would rather buy a $700-$1000 welder and do it myself!
