I finnally have a turboford again, and it is far exceding my expectations.
I have owned my NA mustang for a long time, and last summer, I rebuilt it with diamond .030 over pistons and some other goodies with a plan later to go turbo... that time has come.
Here is my exact setup right now. I decided to make do with the high compression NA head that I was running, and simply run less timing, less boost, and the best gas I can find. It isn't like the tranny will take much power anyway.
T3 60/.48 @ 9psi
ported exhaust elbow
ported E6
3" dp with 2.5" exhaust, no cat, superturbo muffler
big VAM w/8UA and browntops
CAI, no intercooler
cam: 220-220 @.050, .454 lift, 112lsa retarded 6*
milled head .090 for 9.9:1 with .030 over (was going to build a new head for the turbo)diamonds
The cam helps keep the dynamic compression down, but even so I have the fuel pressure at 40, and the timing at 2*. I don't get full boost until 3000rpm. I suspect it is because of the performace cam retarded 6* and 2* of base timing to keep it from detonating. I have a really sweet power band from 4000-6000rpm. It pulls shockingly hard. I raced a vtec prelude from a roll and ate him alive (a couple carlengths from 40-60mph). Those are suppose to run mid 15's too.
I was hoping for 150hp at the wheels, but acts more like 175hp to the wheels. I don't understand why it is such an animal on the top end. I have no head porting, but milling it did take out some of the shrouding.
It isn't optimal, but after finding water while porting the head I was going to build for the turbo, I decided to just slap it together, but I am still looking to build a low compression head.

Sounds like a pretty cool set-up.

I have a feeling that if you built a low compression, fully ported head and turned the boost up to about 15 psi that you'll see even more gains. Although I'm sure you already knew that.

Pretty soon I will own the fastest naturally aspirated 2.3L Mustang on StangNet. Even though that still isn't saying much.

I dont know what Crovax was running for a naturally aspirated setup.

Yours and my future n/a would probably be pretty close. I see you were making 138rwtq and 117rwhp. I hope to make a little more than that, hopefully up around 140-150hp at the flywheel. The fact that mine is a 5 speed and not an auto will definitely rob me of less power at the rear wheels.

What was Crovax's setup?

well i havent cranked my motor yet. as soon as i break it in i hope it'll have a little power. right now i got the basics. ranger cam, tube header, gutted intake, 14* advance, no cat, 2.5" to a 40 series, k&n CAI, POS a4ld with a shift kit (never seen tranny fluid yet.) ported/milled head.
i dont want to put any no2 to it considering the motor hasnt seen oil, and the tranny hasnt seen fluid. maybe a little 7-9psi of boost when i fully break the motor in. whats your opinion on boosting an n/a?

yeah, on the exhaust side. I was enlarging the entire port, but appartely, I can't draw a streight line. My port shifted, and and hit water.

Whats your new motor like? Is it a turbo motor?

Your naturally aspirated set-up looks pretty good, fairly similar to what I plan to run.

I am just finishing up my new head which will also have just the basics. Ranger Roller, fully ported & polished, milled out (not quite sure how far yet, probably around .060"). My intakes are pretty well stock, just maybe a little light polishing on them to let the air and fuel flow a little easier. K&N CAI. For exhaust Im doing a Ranger header with 2.25" all the way back with no cats and a FlowMaster (Not decided on which series yet). After the muffler I'll split it with a y-pipe and run to dual resonated boom tips. And dont forget the 5 speed manual which is a must in my books.

My opinion on boosting a naturally aspirated motor is only do it if you have another motor to replace it with, because you will likely blow it up. Sure, you can do it without blowing it up, but you wont be able to tune it as effectively as you could if you had a turbo motor to begin with.

Sorry for getting off topic on your thread bhuff.

Hey bhuff, where on the priority list is a t-5 swap? If it all. Just out of curiosity.

Yes, the rhetoric is always build a low-compression motor for forced induction. BUT, i've been reading into dyno tests in MM&FF about high vs. low compression on forced induction V8's. The difference is like 60hp, with gobs of power on the top end. It seems like high-compression loves revs, and combined with a turbo, you'll see some nice gains. Plus, you've got that A237 cam.

The T5 will come sometime after the warrenty is up on the A4ld (this august). Probably whenever auto needs rebuilt again, but I am actually starting to like the tranny-turbo engine combination.
Tonight from a stoplight, I power braked it to the limit of traction, and nailed it to the floor on the green light. The tires spun slightly, squeeling all the way to 25mph where they broke traction as I jumped through peak torque. From there, the tires clawed hard for traction, gripped and I ripped to50mph at 6000rpm in first gear, where I decided that was enough felonies and let off.

If I had done an exhaust header and a manual swap I bet my old 89 would of gone 17.9 17.8. She went 18.2 something like 4-5 years ago here in st.louis at Gateway. Was funny never felt like i was taking so long to go so short a distance.
