Well i brought my car to the shop to get the new gears put in and i got a call 2 hours later, the mechanic says i need a new axle because my passenger side axle is "pitted", he says he doesnt know what caused it but coudl have been from hitting a big bump or something..

Anyway does this sound legit or are they just trying to squeeze a few extra bucks out of me?

I had a similar thing happen to me. It was the driverside outer bearing area. The axle was pitted and grooved where the bearing sat. Caused a loud howling and had to replace the axle and bearing. Mechanic never saw something like that before.

It's actually very common on GM 10 and 12 bolt rearends. In order to save money the bearing rides on the axle instead of a race like a Ford 9 inch. I know why Ford copied them for the 8.8, it is cheaper to produce.

the axle bearing is wiped out.. I have seen this many times, just replace the axle and the bearing..

If your mechanic can not figure out thats what caused the pitting then he is retarded.

PSI find that out for you? How much are they going to charge to fix it?

I know a guy that'll install whatever you need for a hell of a price man
