Ok guys heres the deal:
Car is on jack stands on 4 points.
E-Brake off, Rear wheels spin freely
~ When I grab my rear wheel and put steady pressure in either direction, it turns somewhat....maybe 1/2 inch ( guesing ) before the driveshaft pinion turns. (driveshaft is off as well) This all happens with a slight clunk. It feels like there is play somewhere. Pumpkin cover is off, and I see no visual gear teeth damage. Is this a problem and how to I correct it? Thanks

Check the pinion nut and make sure it is still tight, if it is loose remove it and put red loctight on it and reinstall it. Wait 24 hours before driving it so the loctight will have time to fully cure. It's either that or your pinion bearings are on their way out.

Diveshaft is off the car 88GTMustang. I had a feeling it has something to do with the pinion.

well i was fuzting around before, and found that when i turn the pinion directly, it moves with the gears a bit before the axles are loaded. basically, the gears and pinion move together but the wheels dont.

Mine is the same way. If this is not normal, I'd like to know.

There is not much slop, but it seems like the tiny bit of play between the ring and the pinion combine with more play at the axle splines to cause this.
