hi all, i'm posting this for my son. he took his 1988GT to get a safety inspection and it failed the mechanic said he needs to have his cats and the air pump. funny thing is that i have an older mustang also and took it to the same shop and i passed, with out my cats and air pump. what gives . we thought that his car would'nt need these items for a safety inspection. unfortunatly he does'nt have those parts any more, what can we do?

Call the DMV: I was told you won't even need an inspection sticker for a car that old. If you notice at car shows, many do not have them.

93 teal terror, you MUST have cats on for your inspection. They will not do an emissions test on a car before '98, but should do a visual inspection; any factory emission equipment removed and you fail. Besides, modern cats don't cost much h.p., maybe two or three so there is no reason to remove them.

Depends with an aftermarket catted h pipe....my car went from 14.3 to a 15.1....granted there are a lot of factors that can vary but still thats a huge gap with everything else the same. It would help if the aftermarket h-pipe i bought was mandrel bent though

I had an 86GT and installed a BBK manrel bent h pipe with cats and gained nothing and lost nothing in the 1/8th. mile. I also tried running open pipes with stock cats before installing the BBk unit and it slowed down 1/10.

Just depends....your h pipe is mandrel bent and 2 1/2", mine is not and 2 1/4"....so mine does consume quite a bit of hp and tq. more than 2 or 3 hp. and really cats are kinda a mute point anyway...the car passes the emissions test either way, the hydrocarbons are just higher than if it had cats...but its still within the passing range. The only thing it wont pass is the visual.
