Need a new 302 block

essentially, it is the oil plan, the intake, and the headers that are extra. also, iirc, the head bolts are 7/16" instead of 3/8". it is possible to get it under a stock hood, but to do so, you might need an aftermarket k-member.

i don't know about vortech fitment and how much it sticks out though, sorry. there was a guy on here, parchisi, who had a 351 with a blower. i haven't seen much from him lately.

as to the hanky's concern about the pistons and rings, i have 2 comments: (1) most engine shops usually have a phone number you can call if you want to upgrade to forged stuff (or use a different cam or something), and (2) hyper pistons are more robust than some people think, especially if you tune it correctly (just look at all the guys here and on the other popular stang forums who have a stock bottom end and a blower).

I'm in your same boat man. I need to replace my vorteched 302 and I wanted to add some cubes but I'm afraid of longevity and wasting my $ on a stock block......sure wish they didn't suck heh.

I wanted to step to a 331/347, but I'm likely to break the block same as yourself. What stinks is that it gets SUPER $ to go to an aftermarket block and a stroker to boot.

I think the new BOSS blocks are machined but rough bore as it's going to change based on displacement needs, as it's going to differ from supplier to supplier. I've heard people putting another $1000 back into the aftermarket DARTs getting an allign hone and true decked and so forth. The boss seems to be a popular choice though for sure. Ever look into the World products end of things? I also grabbed a few brochures at PRI (awesome event)....place made me feel so insignificant with my car haha.

The new Boss 302 is a lame duck. For some reason Ford gave it short cylinders that are about 1/2 inch shorter then normal. A custom piston is required to run it if you want the 3.4" stroke 347. Furthermore, its poor for power adders. When you run a blower piston the rings move further down... when you have already short pistons due to the short cylinders, things aren't looking so hot. If you want the 4.0" x 3.2" 331 you should be alright, I'd stay away from the 347 though. I suppose you could run the 4.125" x 3.2" 347, but then you are SOL if anything breaks after hogging out the bore to its limit.

I don't think the Boss 351 has this problem, but worth looking into.

I heard about it from my Uncle, who previously built engines with Bob "Mondo" Purcell here in Massachusetts, until Bob's unfortunate and untimely death a few months ago. I have to snap pictures of my Uncle's current mustang, 2004 GT special edition with a 5.0 mod motor, cams, heads, intake, etc etc etc, runs 10s with slicks and skinnies, 7000 rpms all day long, and you can shoot down the road for groceries / ice cream. It's not really appropriate to the 94-95 forum though, plus I had nothing to do with the car other then go for a ride in it.

Did some quick Googling for you...

A stock block s/c 351 is what I'm going for. I'm hoping it will hold up better than a 302 block will. As for clearance on the front of the engine to the radiator, it will be no different than the 302 because front to back dimensions of the 351 are the same. It will come up higher, but Saleen figured this out somehow.

For 5-600 reliable HP, i've heard, read and witnessed 351's doing quite well in that power range.
